I cannot say all the great things about Esperanza Inn, the hosts and the experience. It would take too long! But here goes
The Island: this Island is for you if you love nature, down to earth experiences with wild horses and cats and dogs running around, getting to remote beaches all to yourself or driving down winding dirt roads to a surprise beach or ruin or wonder that you did not expect. This Island is not for you if you prefer all inclusive resort type vacations with sanitized beaches and endless fruity cocktails, are a partier or are afraid of nature, sand and going off the beaten path.
Our stay at the Esperanza Inn: Tyler and Suzanne were very communicative. They reached out to us ahead of time to ensure they prepared for our stay. They got us checked in nicely, helped us get a different vehicle (rent a jeep not a golf cart - half the beaches are not accessible by the golf cart), and had the AC set up for us in the room before we arrived. Our suite had a queen and a king size bed in the bedroom, a huge closet, tv, ac unit, and some shelves. The bathroom has shower and toilet and sink. The living room has a futon couch, table and 4 chairs. And the kitchen is a full kitchen with all the basic amenities you could want - fridge, range top, microwave, toaster, sink, cabinets, coffee, cutlery and cook ware. Everything worked well. And it has a private patio with lots of seating.
The Inn also has a beautiful shared kitchen. That is huge and has a table with many chairs, living room area with books and games and patio outside with friendly neighborhood cats and a small pool. We didn't use the pool. You can't use it at night - and we spent every daylight hour at a beach or on a hike.
The Inn was quiet. No noise was heard from the neighbors. The roosters crow all day and night - I brought ear plugs in case I needed them because I read that they crow all the time. I slept through it without the ear plugs.
The room was clean - we stayed an entire week. Each morning Tyler greeted us and was honestly interested in what we wanted to do. He was excited that my husband and I are outdoor enthusiasts and pointed us to many hikes and remote beaches to experience a lot of nature. We could not take up all of his suggestions in one week - but we did a lot of them. Snorkeling off of mosquito pier, going to the very end of La Chiba and walking along the most beautiful rocky shore and then going back to the white sands and calm water to wade around. Hiking to Novillo and having the whole beach to ourselves. The hidden swings beach along Esperanza. The local run eateries. Endless suggestions that were all amazing.
Tyler and Suzanne were pleasant and their little doggie pebbles greeted us each morning. They are available via text at any time and are at the inn each morning and for people's check ins and check outs.
The Inn is located in what we thought was the best area. It's just a turn away from Esperanza shore - so you are just feet from the beach but also away from the restaurant noise. So it's quiet, and you can walk to get food or go swimming in just 5 minutes.
Many of the reviews can discuss that things are run down - but Esperanza inn is better than most. This is a small tropical island. Nothing last long here. The salt air and water, the winds, the hurricanes - they all bring things back to the earth quickly on Vieques. If you're looking for something posh and polished - you're headed for the wrong island. This island is about nature, cycles of life, history and being close to roots.
Walk around, feed a horse a guava, reach up and take a star fruit or a mango and eat it right there, watch the lizards scurry around, the land crabs walk sideways, the hermit crabs scurry around, go snorkel and just enjoy the scenery of somewhere natural and real
Overall looking at all the inns and places to stay once we arrived I think we hit the jackpot with Esperanza Inn. Compared to most other places it is well maintained, and it's less busy and hectic than any of the places that has its own...

Read moreMy husband and I just returned from Vieques last night after a wonderful 4-night anniversary stay at the Esperanza Inn. From initial booking to the day we arrived to the day we left, we felt like family. Suzann, Tyler, and Pebble (their sweet pup) provided a friendly and warm environment that was unobtrusive yet felt familiar, like visiting family members you enjoy spending time with.
We stayed in The Palms, and loved it! We had everything we needed, and ample space to relax and watch TV if we wanted, but we never turned it on. After every day, we truly looked forward to returning to our “home” and relaxing with a glass of wine before bed.
They’ve really thought of everything – our room was stocked with a mini fridge, microwave, coffee pot, coffee/creamer, and mugs. Downstairs in the shared kitchen we could use the full space if we wanted to cook, though we preferred to eat out every day. I DID however, enjoy the coffee my husband poured for me from the shared kitchen every morning so it saved us time from me making my own since I’d been sleeping in every day.
Both Suzann and Tyler were excellent at advising us on areas of the island to visit based on our likes. We like to hike, so they recommended Mt. Pirata which is the highest point on Vieques at almost 1,000 feet. It recently opened to the public, so we HAD to hike that. It was a steep but paved the entire way, and the observation deck at the top allowed us a beautiful view out to the mainland of Puerto Rico and other islands, with a couple of benches for resting under a mango tree.
Esperanza Inn is nicely located less than a block off of the Malecon, making it super easy to leave your vehicle and walk to several restaurants, bars, and a beach. It’s also only about a 5-minute walk to where the bioluminescent tours depart! Be sure to check out the sunset from the top of El Blok which is at the opposite end of the Malecon, but still only about 5 minutes to walk there.
We did use our rented vehicle every day though as we ventured around the island to see several beaches, the rum distillery, the Arepas Festival in Isabela, the 400-year-old Ceiba tree, Mosquito Pier, the bunkers, and other sites. I highly recommend renting a 4-wheel drive. We rented an SUV, but it was a Kia Soul and really wasn’t conducive to the type of terrain on Vieques. When we travel there again, we will rent a Jeep or Bronco for a nicer ride to the beaches off the beaten path and to the Sugar Mill Ruins and the archeological site.
We will absolutely stay at Esperanza Inn again and look forward to seeing Suzann, Tyler and Pebble who we all thank for helping us create such a nice...
