I booked a Bioluminescent tour and it couldn't have gone any worse for me. Lol. I fell on the way to my Kayak and busted up my knee pretty bad. And when I was in the Kayak, I tipped over 3 times in the first 15 minutes.
LOL.
FML.
All I can do is laugh about it.
That was the negative... Let me tell you about all the positives!
Denisse is an angel sent from the heavens! She was my tour guide and eventually turned into my nurse : ) She is incredibly knowledgeable about the island and bio bay, and it was such a pleasure listening to her speak. She is very passionate about what she does. After I fell, I tried to hide in a corner and act as if nothing had happened. Denisse wasn't having it. She heard that I fell and found me! She asked if I was OK, I tried to lie, but nothing gets by Denisse. She saw my knee and took action. She was so kind and gentle while she cleaned my wound. After the tour was over, she cleaned my knee again and then she wrapped it with a medical cloth. And of course, she sent me home with supplies to help my knee heal.
She ended up being one of the nicest humans that I met while I was in Puerto Rico : )
Enter Kayak... I flipped over three times. SMH. I spent more time swimming in the bio bay than I did in my actual kayak. I waved the white flag. LOL. Insert Carlos.
Carlos was one of the tour guides on the water with us. God blessed me with not one but two AMAZING HUMAN BEINGS that night. Carlos went from tour guide, to lifeguard, and ended up being my therapist. He talked with me, made me laugh, kept me calm, and stayed with me the whole time. He safely got me back to shore. Never once did he make me feel ashamed or embarrassed. While onshore I got to know Carlos and he educated me more on the island of Vieques. Carlos, you are a great dude and I enjoyed our time! I tried to go to Sun Bay beach the next day and find you but I was unsuccessful. I'm sure I will link up with you soon bro!
My girlfriend, who crushed it on the kayak, said the bio bay tour was unbelievable and one of the best parts of our trip to PR. The bio bay is extremely dark, which adds to the experience. You may be there to see the Bioluminescent, but you end up getting so much other beauty as well. The stars were incredible that night!! I'll be back to Vieques, I will conquer the kayak, and I will do this Bio Bay tour again. And100% that Jak Watersports is the only company that I...
Read moreWe went on two tours with Jaks, and once with another company. Jaks was BY FAR the best for many reasons.
I stayed in PR for a total of 5 weeks between 2 visits. I left reviews as often as I could remember between all the rum drinks I had 😅. Take my reviews as you will. I was traveling with one other mom and 4 teenage girls. We had...
Read moreWe were driven to the bay in a smelly old school bus designed for kids, which made Spirit Airlines feel like first class. The bus had hard springs and the bumpy drive to the destination was a torture and didn’t feel safe at all since it was 2 adults sharing little kids seat. Other companies drove past us with normal new SUVs.
I also didn’t appreciate their Covid policies. Making us wear a mask when we are completely outdoors 10 ft away from the guide. The guide literally stopped everything to tell me to wear a mask, so I just walked to the side until the briefing ended. The guide seemed like a healthy 40 year old, and if he can’t stand 2+ ft apart from people in the great outdoor without double protection maybe he should not work in hospitality. (This is written at the end of April 2022 when masks were no longer required on airlines)
The guides were nice and informative and did their job as expected. I appreciated the company providing a deet free mosquito repellent and a dry bag.
The tour itself was disappointing for me, as I expected more based on the pics and videos I saw in California. it’s not the company’s fault as except for the kayak photo on their website which is probably photoshopped the other photos look real and don’t create false expectations like other companies.
There is a cool effect of light when you row or put your hand in water and the you can see dots of light through the clear bottom.
I was able to take some pics and videos with a normal iPhone on long exposure setting, or normal settings and then editing the exposure on the basic iPhone photo editor. You do need to create a lot of stir to capture it.
The tour is not overpriced if you’re already in Viques but not worth the hassle of getting from mainland peurto rico, in my opinion. Be realistic about your...
