Well lets just say I am not sure what went wrong here today and I hope we just hit the spot on a bad day. After hearing that this place "invented the Rum Runner" and we were in the keys driving by we figured it was time for a "when in Rome" thing so we stopped in. After walking by the large sign with the "Home Of the original rum runner" on it along with the ingredients listed as well we decided we should definitely try this signature cocktail at its birthplace. It was early and there was only 1 other couple at the bar so again we thought we lucked out, quick drink and then on our way. We ordered the 2 signature cocktails and the bartender looked left, then right, then walked away for a moment. He came back and said it may be a moment, then we noticed him walking over to the big painted sign and appeared to be reading the ingredients. But then he came back and said he would need to find someone to make the infamous cocktail for us. We did not wait, but appreciated that he did not try to make it if he was not confident. But we are confused as to how that was not part of...
Read moreEnjoyed a lovely view with Breakfast on Sunday (7/19). Breakfast was pretty much what I expected. Good, probably 4 stars. However, I'm giving this visit 2 stars because of our waitress. She didn't wear her mask at any time during our visit. This included when she went to all of her other tables. She wore it around her chin!? I'm sorry, but that is useless! She also argued with the Kitchen staff close enough to our table that you could hear the argument. I feel very conflicted about writing such a bad review as I was just as conflicted about visiting the Keys for the weekend given COVID. I feel bad for service industry workers during these times and I certainly don't want to come off as a "Karen" for lack of a better term. That being said all the other establishments we visited were amazing. Wearing mask and requiring visitors to wear masks when not seated. Just a little disappointed in this place given it's reputation. Hopefully I can revisit in the future and have a better experience. Thanks Cooks for a...
Read moreTook me a while to find it — came here ALOT in late 90s but it was all tiki bar, reggae, rum runners and raw oysters connected with Kokomo inn immediately next door. Was here again maybe 10-15 years ago - pretty much like before. Now it’s all corp, modernized…well done but it took me at least 15 min to convince myself it was the same place.
Had the chicken quesadillas (they’re ok); chicharrones (crunchy and warm but I think from a bag — correct me if I’m wrong); elote bowl was “pretty good”. Rum runner was very good (not frozen)
Service was great. Atmosphere good, isn’t the same, but all fabulous things must come to an end and so with the 80s & 90s tiki bar on Islamorada. The new one is definitely worth a stop. I came down to the keys today for this place only…glad I did.
To the owners and managers…I get it…it’s a beautiful remake but for this old Buffeter I miss the old days at the Kokomo Tiiki Hut
PS. The bathrooms fared VERY well with the refurb. Very clean...
