I found this place on Google maps. Thank heaven for Google maps. I drive past this place frequently and haven't noticed it. Or if I noticed it, I just saw a hole in the wall restaurant in an industrial zone.
This place does not deserve obscurity. I frequent Mojo's and this place tops Mojo's by several stars. My kids live in New York City, and I have eaten dozens of meals that top $60 per person. Some that topped $100.
None of them top Checker BBQ. The menu is narrow. You have fired shrimp and fried fish. Fried green tomatoes, Collards, crab cakes, cheese grits, and a few other things, including pork ribs. If you go on a buffet night, the quantity of food will overwhelm you.
No restaurant I have ever been to prepares seafood as well. None are even close. The shrimp are same day fresh and perfectly cooked. This is the only place I've been to that knows how to make cocktail sauce. Enough horseradish to clear your sinuses. Simply great.
If cracker cooking doesn't appeal to you, this is not your place, but if local seafood and local cooking, perfectly done, appeals to you, give them a call. I recommend dialing ahead to make sure you can get a reservation for a...
Read moreThis place is a hole in the wall, we like to stop at places that are local to the area when I'm traveling so I found this on google map along my route to Orlando. It has great reviews so we stopped but to our disappointment it has a closed sign up on the door. I saw people in there and went in and ask if they were closed and the owner called me over to him and said he sold out of food for the day. It was around 1pm he tried to give me a gift certificate to come back another day but I told him I was traveling through and would not be back by to use them. This guy was super nice. I told him we found him on Google and just wanted to check him out since he had great reviews. So he said that he wanted us to at least try something so he had 8 peices of shrimp left that wasn't cooked so he told us to get some collards that was still available and some drinks and sit down while he cooked the last of his shrimp and made us fried green tomatoes to try it it was all on the house. And it was really good I wish I would had been there earlier. But this place is great and the owner is extremely nice and believes in treating his customers great. Will definitely stop by...
Read moreSOUTHERN CHARM is by far my favorite destination for great food and company. I took a friend there for lunch today and he too was blown away by the quality of food the friendly atmosphere. Certainly looking to going back soon. Chef Art is the best. I met him at a house party that he was catering and I was the working photographer. Thirty or so guest had a meal of a lifetime.
My 13 year old grandson and I went to Southern Charm for dinner last night and couldn't have had a better experience, bothe in terms of the food and ambiance, but also the great time we had. The food was delicious and plentiful. The patrons in our dining area were all great. They were friendly and the conversations flowed. My grandson who on a good day is a finiky eater was over the moon eating crabcakes, freshly fired shrimp, mashed potatoes made with scallops and washing all that down with a few of Art's spectacular ribs. We came home with a full plate of shimp and crabcakes which became breakfast food for this growing teenager. Southern Cafe is now his number one eating spot. ...
