Yamato Japanese Steakhouse — Restaurant in Jasper

On March 11th we had a group of 7, so we called ahead. Menu's and silverware already on the table. They sat us, then didn't come to take our drink order for 25 minutes. Drinks came out in 10. Then we waited another 30 minutes for them to take our order. (We had to flag the waitress down) Another 20 minutes before we got our soup and salad. Then 35 minutes later the sushi & appetizers came out. Waited 15 minutes for 3 orders. Another 15 minutes for the rest. The food was HORRIBLE, except for the sushi and appetizers. The fried rice was steamed sticky rice. Half the scallops on my plate were burnt, the others were like rubber. I had to spit them out. The steaks weren't cooked right. The the Lobster was overcooked. The vegetables were burnt.

We asked twice for the check while we were eating. It took 25 minutes before she brought it. We couldn't believe she had the audacity to add on a $45 tip. I let it be known that wasn't happening, and why. We got to the register, and another waitress was ringing out the check. She turns to our waitress complaining loudly about the tip being marked out. Unbelievable!! We were very upset by the whole experience. Other patrons at the door said their food was horrible too.

Then, the worst!! I became very sick with food poisoning at the motel at 2:30 in the morning. Thank God for the drug store being open. I was still sick and weak at checkout. It took another day before I felt better. I've heard shellfish poisoning is the worst..... Im a believer!

Service was very polite, attentive and speedy. Atmosphere was cozy and comfortable for the most part; our booth was affected by the patrons behind us, when they moved their weight around our seat became unstable so it was uncomfortable somewhat, until that patron left. But no huge deal, just some old/outdated booths and chairs. Everything was clean and the dim lighting was relaxing, music was about a medium in loudness. Comfortable for talking to your dining partners while not being able to easily hear others. Food was fine, definitely not the best we've had for the price range, but not terrible. The salad vegetables were crisp and fresh, tempura was good, spring rolls had good texture but little flavor, steak was average, shrimp was cooked well, sauces were average and a bit mild in flavor, rice was average. Everything tasted edible and inoffensive, just not 'wow!'. For a quick bite in town this seems like a decent option though, and again the service was great, so it's...
