Hidden Grounds Chai & Coffee House — Restaurant in Jersey City

With coffee shops in this area a dime a dozen, ensuring basic service standards are met are key.

We had, unfortunately, a very poor experience at Hidden Grounds in Jersey City this morning. We ordered 3 drinks and 2 pastries and then proceeded to wait over 10 minutes for our drinks (mind you in a completely empty shop….i would have been much more understanding had the restaurant been packed!) which were somehow made 1 at a time even though there were 3 staff present. We didn’t even get the 3rd drink we ordered as it had apparently not been heard and rather than apologize, two of the staff members began to blame the third instead of assisting their guests.

To make matters worse, when we arrived back home we were greeted with stale, clearly day old pastries. We will not...

Review edited: initially I had a bad experience, see comment below But, Anand, the owner reached out to me and was very kind. Our interaction showed he cares about his customers and his business, and that I truly appreciate. Their Yergacheffe coffee is roasted fresh and of course, delicious!! No way to contact anyone at the store if you have any questions before placing an order. I puchased a bag of coffee for my chemex and the grounds were too finely milled, despite my preference set to pour over for Chemex. Customer service basically said there's nothing they can do about it, didn't even offer a refund or credit toward future purchase. Communication with them is only through chat messaging if you have any issues...

Hidden Grounds is such a gem! I absolutely love that it’s woman-owned, and you can truly feel the care and heart that goes into everything they do. The food is always delicious, and their coffee and tea are top-tier— It started with a bagel and latte but now I’ve made it a little tradition to treat myself to Hidden Grounds (and try the entire menu) instead of the closer cafes because the difference in quality is honestly huge. Every time I have guests over in the morning, I grab breakfast from here, and it never fails to impress. They always ask where it’s from.
