Tigers has been a favorite restaurant of mine in the area for a long time, offering a flavor reminiscent of Bellaire Chinatown without the need to travel there. When my boyfriend and I learned about the new management and chefs, we felt a bit concerned but still wanted to give them a chance and ordered take out.
We ordered our usual entrees along with several appetizers, including Sichuan Boiled Fish, Salt and Pepper Shrimp, Veggie Egg Rolls, Dumplings, Hot and Sour Soup, and Egg Drop Soup.
Pros: The culinary execution was excellent across all dishes. The Salt and Pepper Shrimp was perfectly crunchy while fully cooked through and tender, avoiding any rubbery texture. The Sichuan Boiled Fish was soft and melt-in-your-mouth. Everything was cooked to how it was supposed to be either crunchy, melt in your mouth, and what was cooked was never soggy.
Cons: Regrettably, we felt that the dishes did not quite capture the authentic Chinatown flavor Tigers was known for. The seasoning seemed a bit underwhelming, and although the dishes were labeled as spicy, they did not actually have much spice. This was really disappointing as this was our favorite dish, the Sichuan boiled fish, used to be filled with red hot oil that had a growing spice flavor and full of vegetables to balance out the spice. By the end of it made you sweat without crying! This was just fish with a sprinkle of veggies. Should we have given a spice level when ordering online? I don’t know. The salt and pepper shrimp was on the bed of lettuce instead of cabbage, so eventually the lettuce wilted and wasn’t appetizing. The veggie egg rolls needed sweet-and-sour sauce because it just tasted like cabbage. The soups tasted more watered down compared to what we’ve experienced at general American Chinese restaurants. While the dumplings were quite tasty, it made us curious whether they were prepackaged and simply well-cooked, rather than freshly made. Unsure if this was supposed to have sauce or not because ours came without anything, but the menu states that it’s supposed to be in a chefs sauce. Still good though.
This all being said, We really do want to give new management a chance because they are very nice and respectful. Maybe we came on an off day or their authentic menu is not where needs to be. Maybe we need to try their American Chinese menu instead. We’ll be coming back for a...
Read moreI was looking for some good Chinese food but didn't want to drive all the way to China town. I'm mixed on this place but will return to try some new plates that I had my eye on. Not sure if they're open for dine in but we got our food to go (ordered online). The portions are very large and fairly priced. I would have given 5 stars if the noodles weren't such a disappointment.
The Good: Tiger Beef Wrap is a must try. It was phenomenally delicious, very beefy and savory flavor. The menu said there was supposed to be a cilantro sauce but we got no sauce. Still a 10/10
Braised Pork with Pickled Vegetables is a sweet tender pork belly. It has a lot of fat which I'm not a fan of but my SO absolutely loved. Comes with some steamed rice, pineapple, and bok choy. He rated it a 12/10 but I'd say 8/10
Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup is an extremely meaty, savory soup to the point of not being my taste. It has a very deep beefy flavor. You can get the soup spicy or regular and with rice noodles or regular noodles. We got regular soup and regular noodles. SO loved it of course said it was a 11/10 but to me 6/10
The Meh: Pork Xiao Long Bao was okay. Not great not bad. I wouldn't order it again. China town has better offerings. 5/10
The Bad: Spicy Dan Dan Noodles were thrown away. The portion was enormous with very little sauce. I mixed it all together as well as I could and 90% of the noodles tasted of nothing. Another review here said their beef noodles were also dry. I just don't suggest getting any dry noodle dishes here. The noodles are also obviously packaged which would probably have been fine if there was any sauce to add flavor. Disappointed I wasted $8 on this. Would have rather gotten another...
Read moreWent here upon recommendation from another foodie friend. Very small and unassuming little space. We were greeted promptly and seated. Minimalist decor and very clean establishment. We just had a couple items to try and they were excellent is taste and presentation. We had the beef wrap, lamb with cumin and the Taiwanese noodle soup. Beef wrap consisted of thinly sliced beef with scallions and cilantro wrapped in a tortilla. It wasn't served with a sauce and that was a bit disappointing. It definitely needs a dipping sauce. The lamb with cumin was spicy and delicious. The fragrance and taste of the spice was telling. Lamb was tender. Onions a bit overcooked for my preference but overall a very tasty dish. Not something that you find at any Asian restaurants... will try the beef with cumin next time. And now..drum roll please...the Taiwanese noodle soup was awesome and really hit the spot for me. They have 3 levels of spicy and I chose number 2. You are forewarned that it is extremely spicy and contains ghost pepper. It was well seasoned and I got about 5 chunks of beef. I did miss not having a bit more veggies to go with the soup. For a fiery spice addict such as myself... it was something to remember. I couldn't drink all the broth because it was a bit overwhelming after some time. All in all, super pleasant experience, awesome food and pleasant service. Will definitely be returning. Do...
