This was my first experience with Mythos. I made a reservation and requested a quiet booth for 4. Upon arriving I was informed by the hostess (who came across as annoyed) there were no booths. I understood. I didn't anticipate they were going to seat us next to an incoming party of 12, directly in front of the door leading to the bathroom on this side of the restaurant. Our server was pleasant enough. He, however, didn't seem to be knowledgeable of the menu and couldn't answer any of the questions posed to him regarding it. I asked him, at one point, whether he, himself, had eaten here. He replied, "Once, a while ago, before I started working here." This should have set off some warning bells for me. I asked what he had eaten then and took it as a recommendation. That was a mistake. I ordered the 12 Oz Ribeye, cooked medium rare, with a loaded baked potato. I could not have been more disappointed in my steak. It was, maybe, 1/2 inch thick and cooked well beyond medium. The baked potato was the best thing on my plate. My wife ordered Filet Medallions. These are served with a mixture which appeared to have way too many ingredients. It was published as also to include an asparagus saffron risotto. This was more akin to Rice Pilaf than risotto. The desserts were hit and miss. I ordered the Strawberry Shortcake. I absolutely loved it. In fact, I recommend you go for the Strawberry shortcake and ONLY the Strawberry shortcake. My wife ordered the Tiramisu. Again, another concoction sullying the good name of an otherwise fantastic dessert. Served in a chocolate bowl, this appeared to be more of a pudding with a ladyfinger on the side than Tiramisu. Anyone who has ever had REAL Tiramisu would be appalled, as was my wife. I have it on good authority the lunch here is worthwhile. I will likely never know. I do not feel they are talented enough in the kitchen nor in dining room to justify the cost and...
Read moreWe were traveling through and contacted a foodie about where to eat in Joplin and got the referral to go to Mythos. Here’s what we experienced:
FOOD: I don’t even remember what my wife got (lol) but it was some Greek food. She really like it but it’s not something I would have enjoyed. It was different (reference the picture) and she likes new stuff. Me? I had a hamburger with bacon. I prob should have got a steak but was in the mood for a good hamburger. Whereas the burger was good, it was not over the top. It was near overdone. Maybe I should have upgraded to the Kobe burger. I’d try something different next time. Little disappointed here as I was figuring a great burger at an upscale restaurant.
SERVICE: I’ll just say the bigger group next to us got better and quicker service than we did. Our waiter wasn’t overwhelmed (from what we could see) but was much slower. Our food was ordered first and the other group’s came out first. Maybe your server will be better.
ATMOSPHERE: This is set up as a high-end steak house (or restaurant). From the outside to the inside, it prepares you for an up town meal. The place was nice and clean and we were seated very professionally. The prices surprised us. They do not reflect a high end facility. Steaks are more expensive but a Kobe burger is $17 and the others are cheaper. Great prices.
All in all, I would prob go back should I be traveling through Joplin (which we do a cpl times a year). I’d just order something different and hope I get a different server. Don’t drool over my water. I get that...
Read moreThis restaurant has a very nice atmosphere for a fine date but the food is very mediocre and the service we received was sub-par. For a place called Mythos which has a Greek theme, they should have more Greek-style dishes. For crying out loud, they have Cashew Chicken on the menu.
We ordered the Mythos appetizer platter which was the most Mediterranean thing there and it was…ok. The spanakopita and tyropita were not fresh and it is obvious they got them from a package - the same ones I can buy at the grocery store. The same was true of their baklava - so incredibly hard it almost broke the fork and as dry as a summer day in Arizona. If you are going to charge that much and also call yourself a Mediterranean restaurant then the least you could do is make your own philo dough for these two dishes instead of unwrap them from a package. When I complained about them, the server even told me as much - that they don’t make it fresh but get them in a package.
The servers were nice but incredibly slow and they weren’t even full when we were there. It took over 5 minutes just for us to get water. We asked for a wine menu and it never came. I had to stick my hand out into the aisle and say “hello” to our waiter who was walking right by us to remind him of it. Even after that, he finally brought it half way through the meal. It was then another huge wait to actually get the wine. Our glasses of wine came when we were practically finished our meal.
Maybe the steak is better (we didn’t order it) but if that is true, they should rebrand as a...
