Buyer beware! This was one of my favorite French Restaurants in town. My office is in the same plaza and often I would order lunch for the girls in the office and go there in the evening with friends and clients as it always reminds me of Paris.
I went Tuesday night with two friends for an early dinner and to wish my Parisian friend goodbye as he heads back to Paris. I will never return after Tuesday night. The three of us enjoyed a few appetizers, two bottles of wine and desserts. At the end of dinner my head started spinning and I was burning up- a feeling I have had before as I have experienced food poisoning. I spent the night sick as a dog and I was the only one who had the mussels.
I went to grab the receipt to call the restaurant and report what happened and I noticed in addition I was charged for a third bottle of wine that none of us had. I called both of my guests to confirm the same and both stated 2 bottles- in fact we left a half bottle on the table and our glasses were still half full. Yet an additional 100.00 was charged for a bottle of wine that I left a 20.00 tip on!
When I called to speak to the owner- they put the waiter on the phone who tried to tell me that we ordered a third bottle and his story did not correlate with any of our firsts?? I called back to speak to the manager who pretty much accused us of lying about the wine and further denied the mussels were bad and my entire night of throwing up , head spinning and 💩💩💩 could not have been food poisoning due to his mussels. (Hence-it only take one bad mussels.
He finally agreed to give us back the 100.00 for the wine after making us feel like we were cheating him on his 600.00 bill... We did not ask for anything other than the refund of the wine we did not get and the mussels that made me sick!...
Read moreNot what it used be. We went for lunch on a Saturday recently. We were looking forward to our reservation as we had been there a couple of years ago and enjoyed a lovely meal. The restaurant has been closed for lunch for quite awhile and we were surprised and pleased to find that it had reopened for the mid-day hours Wednesday thru Sunday. What a disappointment!!! We tried to order 3 glasses of champagne but we're told there were only 2 left. Really? It wasn't possible to open another bottle? This was on a Saturday so I am sure they had a delivery on Friday. But perhaps the lack of available champagne was caused by a very full restaurant the night before, which would at least explain the exhausted wait staff. I wouldn't have been so upset with the glacial service if the food had been excellent. Unfortunately for us, it was not. To begin with lunch has a very limited and uninspired menu. Onion soup. Endive salad. Croque Monsieur, Croque Madame, Ham on a baguette, Crepe with ham, cheese, and egg. An omelette and moule frites. Nary a pate or steak frites in sight. The only entree, we were told, that came with a side was the omelette with a small salad. We ordered the soup to start and then a Croque Monsieur and sides of fries for each along with wine. The soup was good, the Croque Monsieur thin and sad and the French fries were truly terrible- tepid and tasting vaguely of some sort of vegetable oil. It was all in all a terribly disappointing and yes, expensive meal especially for the quality. I will not return as I am sure the owner will be happy about as he doesn't seem to do well with criticism. Don't work your wait staff so hard - open 7 nights a week 5 days for lunch - no wonder they are zombies. Don't open for lunch as it is clearly too much...
Read moreCafé des Artistes has a nice setting by the water, and some of their dishes are great, while others are just so-so. However, we won't be going back. We joined a dozen or so friends there recently for a birthday celebration. Our hosts made reservations well in advance, and since we were a large party, we went at 5:30 pm to accommodate the restaurant owners. Within 10 minutes of everyone arriving, we were told we had to order immediately, that we had to order appetizers and entrées at the same time, and that we had to all go on one check and figure it out amongst ourselves. We consistently felt rushed because they were "fully booked" that night. Here's a thought - don't take more reservations than you can handle without treating diners like they're at a fast food restaurant. It really spoiled the night for everyone.
Now for the food - for appetizers, my hubby and I had the Caprese (we make it better at home) and the Fois Gras (more like a pâté, very pricy, and not that great). For dinner, we split one of the specials - the Coq a Vin. This was delicious and the portion was generous. It was more than enough for both of us. I've also previously had the mussels here, and while they're pretty good, there are better mussels for a considerably lower price at other area restaurants.
I will say that our waiter was phenomenal. We could tell he felt terrible about the way we were being rushed through, and he did his best to make our evening as nice as possible under the circumstances.
All in all, a...
