Vietnam Cafe — Restaurant in Kansas City

Thank you to yelpers who gave great recommendation and urge those who haven’t ventured here to give this place a try! I am visiting Olathe KS for 7 nights during this Labor Day week. Was hoping I’d have chance to see my boyfriend Matt Dz…..z to give him moral support in his difficult time. But though we haven’t been connecting I find KS and MO very pretty historic and friendly cities. I love it here! Some areas are more diverse than others and I feel that where this cafe is located, it is a gem in the local Asian community apparently strong here. Atmosphere here is pretty Asian, long line, they seat parties based on what seating is available. Maybe one of the pros of being alone just for this instance I got seated right away! People are quick on their feet taking orders, moving chairs around. Smells good in here! There are TV monitors showing anime. Very unassuming bare walls with minimal decor. They’re letting the food speak for what they’re known for. Being 1/3 Vietnamese, of course I come to try KS BBQ which my boyfriend loves but I also crave Vietnamese food! I ordered Bun Bo Hue, they make it authentic here with pork blood. The broth was rich but was slightly on sweet side so I made it perfect by adding mam ruoc (shrimp paste). Everything expected was in the Bun bo hue like the cha lua (pork roll). One tiny thing I was looking for was the pig knuckle that normally comes with this dish. First off I ordered the beef stew and all the beef in the stew was nothing but fat gristly meat. There may have been one piece of meat that was edible. On top of that the service was horrible. Our waitress didn't come check on us one time. I had Jalapenos in My Soup and it was very spicy which I don't mind but it would have been nice to get a refill of water to wash it down. I literally would wave my hand and Shout at them to come to my table and the waitresses were just looking at the floor and they wouldn't look at anybody's table cuz they didn't want be bothered. I ended up having to get out of my table and go up to the waitress and ask her for what I needed. After that my friend needed a refill and there was no chance for them to come back to our table even when we asked them to they just ignored us and kept their heads down and kept walking almost like they are trained to just look at the plates after you clean a table and just walk straight to the kitchen don't look at anybody else because they may want you to grab something. Train your waitresses and waiters to be in tentative and look around at tables when they're walking by to see if anybody need something. People should not have to get out of their seats while they're eating and go chase the waitress down just to get a refill of water because she doesn't want to look at our table. I had pho and appetizer. Everything was fine most wait people were friendly and helpful and all was well until I finished eating. I had ordered a large size of pho and had a huge amount of noodles and assorted other things left over. I asked for a carry out container and sat it right next to my food in plain view by the nearest edge of the table. I made a quick trip to the lady's room before packaging up my soup. It was a lot so I wasn't sure it would even all fit in the container. But when i got back other people had been seated and were happily chatting and my food was gone. The snotty waitress provided a new thing of soup that had NO noodles, and only a few pieces of meat. At least I had the presence of mind to ask for more basil not realizing they had only given me broth in replacement for my half full bowl of noodles. When I heated the leftovers, there was a thing that looked like the rind of a dill pickle in the soup, so I thought it was just some type of Asian vegetable. I reheated it all and added my own ramen noodles from home so it would be worth eating. Afterwards I found out the nasty waitress had thrown an already squeezed, used up lime slice in with my soup, the thing that looked like a pickle! Did she dig it out of the trash!?!?
