Flavor buds are screaming wow, after trying a $13 bowl Ramen last night while walking three blocks to get to it we decided to Trek to the Katy area and what a jewel we seem to have found.
You might have to look a little hard from the street to notice that it's hidden almost in a corner of a strip joint but it's worth the find.
We ordered the first Ramen that you see on the menu which all of them were only $10! Try going somewhere else, everybody wants to charge onward from $12 or something ridiculous for something not as savory as what we experienced here.
I ordered the iced oolong tea which was definitely freshly-brewed and a good medium straight with a good tannan finish, you do not see this on many menus elsewhere. $2.50
The spicy edamame on the menu was $4 and had a good nice tap of spicy flavor without curling your taste buds into oblivion.
And now for the best part, the ramen came out with a great presentation as looking like someone did not just throw stuff into the bowl and send it out. It might have contributed it to only about four tables being in here but the fact is this was a great visit and a great time to come in. Nothing was needed as far as adding any kind of spices, soy sauce or whatever. Probably one of the top five Ramen have ever tasted in my life, hopefully it was not a fluke definitely will be back here even though it's a 40 minute drive.
Service was attentive, we really never had to becken about needing an iced tea refill and no smirks about asking for my iced tea to go.
Another miniscule thing that could be looked all over, but not my me is the small laddle looking spoons. This is my favorite utensil of choice simply because this is the way that I think Ramen or any soups should be served, not with those American type soup spoons that barely can hold a wad of any spit but something you could actually let's you dig in at least whole ounce. Have you ever put your quarter in one of those crane machines and tried to play "place the noodle in your soup spoon without it falling out?" Yes that, you don't really have that problem with these.
And the one thing that tipped us to five stars? $10! $10 for something that rivaled any Ramen that I've had that costed anywhere from $12 to even a $20 bowl we had a few weeks ago. Yes there is a place that charges $20 for a bowl.
Another quality about this place that I liked is they do not blare techno Jam over the speakers so you not have to cringe at every sharp note that blast through like some other places I know, you could actually hold a decent conversation here without using your outside...
Read moreOn my first visit to Aji Ramen, we were looking forward to trying out the Ramen but we ordered so many of the small plates that we were too full to have any Ramen.
I was with two other people so we went overboard and ordered Jumbo Shrimp Tempura, Egg Roll, Chicken Karaage, Ika Geso, Sweet Potato Tempura, Spicy Salmon Volcano, Ika Sansal Wasabi, Miso Hamachi Kama, Pork Belly Skewers, Bacon Wrapped Enoki Skewers, Lamb Chop, Salmon on a Skewer, Honey Wasabi Ribeye Skewers and regular Ribeye Skewers. That is quite a number of “small” plates!
Let’s start with what we didn’t like. The Spicy Salmon Volcano was a total miss. It was way too spicy. One person in my group even thought that it was so spicy on purpose to mask salmon that did not taste fresh. The Salmon Skewer came out quite dry too. The Sweet Potato Tempura was a somewhat different potato than what most other restaurants use but it was fine taste wise.
All the other items were delicious. The Jumbo Shrimp Tempura and Egg Roll were very good. One of the better egg rolls I have had in awhile. The Lamb Chops were delicious. The Miso Hamachi Kama was seasoned nicely and was not overcooked. Both types of ribeye skewers were tender but I would recommend the Honey Wasabi Skewers over the plain one. The Chicken Karaage was very juicy. The Pork Belly Skewers and Bacon Wrapped Enoki Skewers are both worth having again.
A week later, I went back to have the Aji Tonkotsu Ramen. The waitress said it was one of the most popular Ramen items on the menu. And I can see why. Once the bowl of Ramen was brought to my table, the smell already told me that it would be very tasty. The thinly sliced pieces of pork were very tender. The pork bone soup base was hearty. There were some corn, seaweed, bamboo shoots, scallions and half of a hard boiled egg included with the Ramen. Add it all together and it was a very good bowl of Ramen.
I like this place and I will be back. It is not a big restaurant. I think there are four booths and about ten to twelve tables. This is a very good drinking spot with all the small...
Read moreAsian restaurants are plentiful in the Katy and surrounding areas. Most of them are small in size but serve memorable food that satisfies. A good example is Aji Ramen.
Ramen is the main reason people visit Aji Ramen and there are about eight or so options, most of which are good in taste and moderately filling. Beyond ramen, you will also find different rice dishes and skewers. If you want a variety of meat, the skewer is the way to go. The ramen tends to stick with pork and chicken, but the skewers offer many more meat options. They serve several different small plates, too.
The food served at Aji Ramen is quite tasty and one thing I like is that the skewers and several other items, while small, are low in price. This is nice because you can customize a meal, based on your appetite, and keep the cost down. A pair of egg rolls and a ribeye skewer, for example, is just right when your appetite isn’t very strong. And for beverages you can select among soft drinks, beer, and yes, sake. I tend to go for the Thai iced tea, which is one of my favorites but the sake is also a good choice.
The inside of Aji Ramen is on the small side, with space for about fifty guests. One thing I’m not too thrilled with is the tables in the middle section because they feature stools for seating: Stools that are low to the ground and have no back support. This isn’t good if you have issues with standing/sitting and if you have back issues. You will need to seek out the booths if you want back support.
I like a nice, cozy Asian restaurant. Aji Ramen is a good choice for those who want a bowl of ramen or other Asian dish for a reasonable price. The seating isn’t the best and I have had issues with slow service, but the food is more than good enough to keep me...
