I was battling a nasty cold when I decided to find a restaurant that had sancocho, a Colombian stew with meat, veggies, and cilantro. Through Yelp I was able to uncover this wonderful hole in the wall that I would gladly return to! I came on a Friday around 5:30 p.m., right before the dinner crowd started to come in. The place is small but there were still so many families there which made the restaurant feel very homey.
I was pretty hungry so I decided to get an appetizer for myself of their morcilla (blood sausage) $3.95 which came with a small arepa and potato topped with a salsa. I definitely underestimated the size of this cheap appetizer and ended up taking it home since the sancocho came out. I ordered their small Sancocho Costilla $7.95 which came with plenty of rib meat, a whole piece of yuca, and a large handful of fresh cilantro on top. When the very friendly server brought it out I honestly stopped her thinking she had a mistake in size! The soup was huge and comes in its own little pot which I loved! I really can't imagine how big the large is since I only ate half and had to bring the rest home.
After seeing all the other food coming out around me at other tables, I do want to come back to try some more of their food...especially thier bandeja paisa! Great hole in the wall with family...
Read moreThe bandeja pais/montanera are huge! Really generous portions of food. You could definitely split them between two people with the addition of maybe one or two appetizers/tapas.
*We were really disappointed that there were no arepas served with the bandeja montanera. Just a very dry and hard yuca (?) chunk. *I rarely eat white rice, but the rice here was excellent! Buttery, savory, really good. *The morcilla was very different from Argentinian morcilla; it had rice and cumin overpowering the sausage flavor. *The egg was perfectly cooked. *The deep fried pork belly was generously portioned, but it really needed some kind of sauce or lime to brighten the flavor.
The tostones were nice. Very crispy and fresh.
Seating is very limited. The restaurant is tiny! Charmingly decorated, so colorful. The staff are very hard working and diligent.
Coffee is only available at breakfast, sadly.
Nothing was terrible, but the main proteins of the dishes were just okay. So that's why the...
Read moreThe service is lacking. I've been going for about 10 days in a row. I got their cantina service which is a great takeout deal. The waitress always seem flustered and attend to you in that matter, even when dining in. They even forget things that I regularly ask for. Like cutlery with my to go orders.
Lucky the food is really good. Fair prices, good portions, and the ingredients taste fresh.
*revision I decided to get my cantina from another restaurant. They take way to long to get orders out. I have given them two weeks to see if the service would improve. Today was the last straw. I called my order in 40 minutes before gong over there. I still had to wait 5 minutes to get my order. So basically it took them 45 minutes to get a cantina order out. Average time for a restaurant to get food out is 15 minutes. Unfortunately the 45 minute time window to get your food is a common time frame for this restaurant. To me my time is worth way more than the taste or portions of...
