Words can’t describe the joy I experienced in this place. Today is the first day off I’ve had in almost 2 months working 70+ hour weeks and I needed some good comfort food. I took a chance on this place and it paid off for this Mississippi boy. I walked in exhausted and a bit sad but walked out feeling the best I have in a long time.
The staff are more than just workers, they are family that are very proud of what they do (they earned it) and you can feel it the moment you walk through the door. Everyone was so welcoming and the conversations we had warmed my soul. The dining area, bathroom, and kitchen is cleaned and organized.
I got the fried catfish with mac and cheese/green beans and banana pudding for dessert. Of course I got the sweet tea as well. Everything was absolutely perfect.
The last time I had catfish anywhere close to this good was on the riverbank of the Pearl river when I was kid fishing with my dad. I’ve tried fried catfish at a few places and have always been disappointed, until today. These guys set the standard for tender and flavorful fried catfish. I’ve stopped ordering green beans at restaurants because they just don’t do it for me, but Nanas got it perfect. My Mawmaw would probably not like this, but I think they are better than hers. Sorry Mawmaw, I love you! The mac was top tier, I can’t really describe it any other way. If you are having trouble deciding on sides just go with this. You will NOT be disappointed.
The banana pudding was just as good as everything else.
Sweet tea was on point, everyone seems to think that sweet tea should just be brown sugar water but that’s not right. These guys get it, it’s not too sweet and the flavor comes through nicely. McDonalds isn’t getting anymore money from me!
Every interaction with the staff was great. You can tell they care deeply about what they are doing. It’s more than just food to them, it’s selfless service providing something that sustains people deep down. You can taste the love they put into the food.
Talking to everyone was wonderful and I found out they are open on Christmas Day feeding anyone that walks through the door. Truly good people who aren’t doing this just for the money. Please visit this place and tell anyone who will listen about it. I will be a lifelong customer, and you will be too if you give...
Read moreBrother n law suggested and brought me here on his dime and it was my first time eating here.
This review is for the owner/management to consider taking the time to identify gaps or inconsistencies of who or what is causing customer concerns regarding the quality of food when mentioned in reviews. Pics in the reviews show different mac and cheese consistency and covers texture and the TASTE of other menu items. As African Americans the main thing we like to pride ourselves on is flavor when it comes to food.
Is it the cook's? Is it the choice of ingredients? Is a combination of both?
I'm just a customer providing honest feedback. I am not looking to gain ANYTHING from this, just providing unbiased feedback that the yes man/women, friend or the family may be afraid to say or address. Man, I didn't want to let my brother n law know how I really felt because he talked highly so I know there's a good reason this place is still around.
I ordered: 2Main, 2side = $30
2Main CHICKEN- it doesn't specify dark or white (I was given 4 nice sized wings). Maybe I overlooked if it is mentioned. CATFISH- it doesn't specify type like filet, nuggets, fried, baked).
2Sides MAC N CHEESE FRIES
*Cashier- young lady was easy to talk too, patient and provided good overall customer service. I would suggest smiling and a little engagement.
*Atmosphere- 4 to 5 tables for in-house dining. They take reservations and one table was reserved so we had to seat ourselves in a less pleasing location. RESTROOM near exit door housed around 4 hand sanitizer stations, the soap dispenser did not work. The overall cleanliness of the establishment was acceptable as there was someone cleaning tables round the clock.
*FOOD- Overall disappointment. With exception of the nuggets (few pieces had bones so be mindful), everything else was bland. Mac and cheese is the absolute main dish at home and at any establishment for me and for it to have NO FLAVOR, LIKE IT WAS MADE with white cheese and drizzled with pepper is all I saw and not enough cheese consistency bringing it almost to looking dry.
At the end of the day I hope management is asking everyone employed "what would NANA say?" To make sure her legacy stays rich and continues to thrive.
May the most high continue to bring joy, love and wisdom...
Read moreI have had good food here before; I have had great food at Covington loc [closed]; this specific experience was extremely disappointing and I want more than a refund. I want a refund, a free cup of grape kool-aid to wash away this disgusting flavor [im half kidding, half serious], and the owner to check the fryer thermostat because this is a health safety issue. . The chops were cooked in a fryer that was too hot so the outside breading was overdone while the inside was almost cooked. Pork is not an “almost cooked” type of animal so it was really disheartening to have to throw half of it away for being inedible. The chops were also not prepped first, as there was a section of just uncooked fat that should have been trimmed off. It was like biting into a marshmallow made of cooking oil. Cornbread was dry and for the $3 charge, a scam. Like, if I have to pay for it, it should be the size of a med-sized coffee shop muffin not a small homemade brownie.
This place genuinely serves really good food sometimes. And I think that’s the main issue. Inconsistent food quality. Especially, if food is made to order, then shouldn’t that improve the odds of having a well prepared meal?
I would have rated zero stars if that were possible. I have had good food here before. I think three times I’ve had perfectly cooked catfish, twice I’ve had great Mac n cheese, and maybe 3 times I’ve had great sweet potatoes. But not every time. One time I had extremely greasy Mac n cheese so I stopped ordering that. one time I had catfish that was not cooked all the way, so I stopped ordering that. One time I receive a clump of brown sugar, no sweet potato so I stopped ordering that, the to-go container is too small to not have noticed there was not any actual potato comes off as this place doesn’t really care what they serve the customer. It’s a we gonna fill the orders and you’ll eat what we give you. And that’s not how a successful food business stays in business. It has to be right every time. And, literally, there is no wiggle room with pork. It has to be cooked all the way prior to serving. And, not by looking at it, by sticking a temperature...
