Jersey Mike's Subs — Restaurant in Kentwood

Ok based on some reviews this place seems hit or miss. I am originally from the philadelphia area and sandwiches are a big deal on the east coast, so when I heard there was a jersey mikes in west michigan I felt I had to try it. I have to say the food was pretty good. However the service was subpar to say the least. It was around dinner time and there were 2 employees who looked pretty clueless. One looking more clueless than the other. Trying to read ingredients off of a posted list on the wall. Not sure if he wasn't totally trained why he was thrown on the grill, the other employee tried to help him, but he too was struggling with the order. We ordered a number 4 sandwiches. 2 were hot and for some reason grilled one after the other instead of at the same time. I ordered a sandwich, not sure what the name was forgot, but it was a club sandwich with 3 different kinds of meats and I got 2. And my daughter had a ham sub and asked for mustard but apparantly I never noticed these things till we were eating but, there was definetly no mustard. I'm not saying bad service is there thing, but working in food service for the past 15 years I can say that properly training your employees is key! I just want to give major kudos to the manager/owner of this shop. Yesterday I ordered a sub online and mistakenly picked the wrong location which of course I didn't discover until I arrived at this location to pick up my sandwich. On any other day I would have just normally went to the correct location, but yesterday I had a doctor's appt. nearby and I didn't have enough time to get to the other one and back. Even though I didn't share this info, the manager recognized the look of 'what do I do now' on my face and immediately offered to make the sandwich there. When he asked what I ordered, I showed him my phone. He took a few seconds to read the order I had with modifications and after making 2 other sandwiches, he made mine- exactly how I ordered it. I asked him if I needed to call the other store to sort it out, etc. and he assured me he would take care of it. He was so non-nonchalant and kind about the whole thing and my sandwich was soooooooo good! I rarely visit national chains but Jersey Mike's has been one of the few exceptions on occasion. Have been a big fan of Jersey Mikes for years. However lately staff is incredibly slow and lacks customer service. I know these days it's hard to get good help but it has really turned me off from going as often as I used to. When I got to the ordering area the man who was using the meat slicer was watching something on his phone. Then touched his phone with his gloves on to move it. Never changed his gloves. After several minutes of me standing there finally asked if I was ready to order. Other times I have gone in the same thing happens. He never acknowledges you by saying anything. One time he was just looking at me I asked him if he was ready for me to give him my order since he said nothing. Thankfully the other man who was there made my sandwiches or I would have told the other guy to change his gloves. I also noticed counters and meat slicer were not cleaned down like they used to be. Slicer looked like it hadn't been cleaned all day. I love jersey mikes would love to see this place get it self...
