There simply are not many consistently solid Chinese restaurants in the Triad area - few excellent Americanized Chinese, and almost no authentic ones. This restaurant has been around for well over 20 years now, and is a "two-fer" - very good Americanized fare, and a number of excellent authentic Cantonese dishes.
We stopped in for an early lunch recently, and were reminded of just how solid the food here is. We chose the Black Pepper Chicken ($5.75 with Pork Fried Rice), and the Kung Bo Chicken ($5.95 with Fried Rice & an Egg Roll). Both choices were excellent.
Black Pepper Chicken is a favorite of mine, and the dish here is done well - plenty of tender chicken, and fresh cut onions, and loads of black pepper. The sauce here is a little darker, a little sweeter, and a little thicker than most, but it works. The Fried Rice was also very, very nice.
The Kung Bo (Kung Pao at other restaurants) was also well done. The chicken consists of thick slices of white meat, which is so often overcooked and dry - but here it is cooked perfectly, and remains tender and full of flavor. The dish here contains a few extraneous vegetables (like Broccoli and Carrot), but not so much that it smothers the intended flavors of this classic dish. Actually, the broccoli here is always excellent, and that is one reason their Beef & Broccoli dish is so popular. This dish is not as spicy as some, but there is a gradual buildup of heat.
We have tried some of the authentic Cantonese dishes in the past (Beef & Broccoli, Cashew Chicken, Hong Kong Dumplings,Stuffed Tofu, and others) and have always found them excellent. Cantonese cuisine is rather mild generally, but when prepared with fresh ingredients, the flavors are very, very nice.
This is a small place, and the noise level can rise - the Chinese ladies in the back of the restaurant talk rather loudly, and rather often. Can be irritating, but the food is good, and the...
Read moreMy family and I have ate here since the restaurant first opened. And we have stayed up with Wayne long after the doors had been closed and locked, eating side by side with his family and often drinking late into the night exchanging philosophy and Waynesboro teaching me a few Chinese words.(Great memories), The food has always been the best Kernersville has to offer to me. And much like the others have stated (Unless you were raised in a barn) the owners will treat you like long lost friends or family. And if you have any complaints (guaranteed to almost never happen) about your experience they will go FAR FAR out of their way to make sure that everything is perfect, down to the smallest detail. Henry (Waynes son) his sister and I practically grew up together, So I'm speaking from first hand experience when I say these people treat their food as ART! And their patrons as guests in their own home.Their 5 star food is to me indubitably the best in the state. And on a final note, I'd HIGHLY recommend the "Chicken egg drop soup", the "House egg roll" And their three All-star (10/10) dishes, The "Bobo platter", The "Hot and spicy steak"(!!! Not actually spicy, just perfect!!!) And their Duck is a MUST not miss!, I've ate no less than 10 other Chinese restaurant duck meals, all of them being completely disgusting, Execpt China Palace. I've not been asked (nor payed) for this review, My long and lavish review is only because of my loyalty they earned with their impeccable service and their always outstanding food quality. So! give it a try and knock back a Ching-Tow...
Read moreThe China Palace Restaurant Experience (Dine-in Edition). I stumbled upon a Chinese restaurant I frequented when I was younger. Uncertain if this was the same establishment, I thought I would give them a try. I had a little drive to make it to China Palace as I reside outside Kernersville. I was greeted at the door and sat at a booth. I ordered their Honey Spicy Chicken with pork fried rice and an egg roll.
While waiting for my food, I went to the restroom to wash my hands, and it appeared clean at the time of my visit. My food came to the table in no time. The Honey Spicy Chicken had a hint of mesquite flavor. Tasty but a different tone than I am used to when eating Chinese food. The pork fried rice did not taste fresh and tasted as if it were leftovers from yesterday. The egg roll was decent, but I have had better. However, I did receive good service, checked on often, and my beverage remained filled.
So would I return to China Palace? I don't believe I would return. Nevertheless, if this is the same restaurant I frequented when younger, they have stood the test of time. We are talking about 20+ years in this industry and still standing. Which means a lot in the world we live in today. Their service was good, and the establishment looked clean inside; however, I am not a fan of their...
