Terrible Food, Dishonest Staff, and Disrespectful Management
After giving this place two chances, I can confidently say I would not recommend it to anyone. Our first visit was already disappointing — I ordered the menudo, which came bland and without hominy. It lacked the basic ingredients that give the dish its character.
Still, we decided to give it one more shot by dining in. That turned out to be a mistake. The food was awful. My salad was genuinely inedible — bitter, soggy, and carelessly thrown together. The rice tasted stale, the meat was dry and overcooked, and the chile relleno was saturated with grease. I didn’t eat my meal at all — the only thing I touched was the refried beans. That says everything.
To make matters worse, my husband’s order was also incorrect. When he pointed it out, the waitress casually told him she had just assumed he wanted it prepared that way instead of asking him directly. That’s not just poor service — that’s not doing your job.
We told the waitress during the meal that we were very disappointed. She acknowledged our concerns but made no effort to address them. No apology, no offer to fix the order — just indifference. When we went to pay, we again expressed our dissatisfaction to the manager. She initially seemed to understand and agreed to charge us for only one plate.
Then came the sarcasm. The manager remarked, “Well, if you didn’t like the food, you should have told the waitress.” I immediately informed her we had, and that’s when the waitress blatantly lied, saying we never said anything. She did this right in front of both me and my husband, as if we weren’t even standing there. The dishonesty was absolutely unacceptable.
Despite previously agreeing to charge us for one meal, the manager then tried to charge us for both. When we questioned the nearly $40 bill — for what should have been a $12.99 plate — she snapped, “You saw the prices when you ordered.” That smug, dismissive response summed up their entire attitude: defensive, unprofessional, and completely unwilling to take responsibility.
They also tried to charge us for two teas we never received.
This wasn’t just a disappointing meal — it was a textbook example of how not to run a restaurant. Poor food, incorrect orders, no accountability, and staff who lie to cover their own mistakes. I don’t take leaving reviews like this lightly, but people deserve to know the kind of treatment they can expect. Save your money, your time, and your patience — go literally...
Read moreTried this place twice this week got there at 8:25 first night and a was told to go orders only. With 30 mins left on their hours. Food was pretty decent. Mini tacos and beef and chicken fajita. Called ahead the next night let them know was it ok to arrive at 8:15p and would we be able to sit down and eat, was told yes. Service from Margarita was unprofessional and turned us off to this place. Menu says serves breakfast all day for additional charge and she tried to say the grill to make French toast was already off. Then she said let me go ask the kitchen and came back and took the order with attitude. The entire experience was made uncomfortable by her, as she made us feel unwelcome and uncomfortable for coming in so close to close. She would give us dirty looks and attitude. She was not attentive and she was sweeping and moping as we were eating to the point, we couldn’t taste the food over the strong chemical smell that was used to clean tables and floors. We were given the bottom of the bag chips that were tiny broken pieces and when we l asked for more chips, was told they were out of chips but when I paid there was a bag in plain view of chips.
To the owner, you might as well put your dine in hours to close at 8pm and tell the staff not to start picking up until 8 pm. They are more concerned with leaving at 9pm vs 9pm is when the restaurant closes and stops serving the last customer. Unbelievable, We won’t be back and it’s unfortunate. I still left a tip even though a poor experience and server was very rude and unprofessional. I know she may not represent the same attitude as others that work there is why I left...
Read moreThe only reason we have gone here is because the food is good. However, if the server continues to treat us like crap, we will stop. When a group of us meet to eat together and have separate bills ( which she will not. Make. We have to figure it out ourselves at the register) and ask for our own chips , I don’t expect the waitress to argue and tell us she put extra chips in the basket. Same size basket we always get and the same little salsa bowl….. how does that equal two. We never ask or want the tortillas that come with the meal, so how are you losing money by giving each paying customer their own chips. I have been polite and did not make a scene, but if that waitress thinks she is the only person on the planet that has a sharp tongue and ugly attitude, she is wrong. If this had been the first time I would say everyone has a bad day, but this has happened before when we ask for something and she would not bring it for us. Another time, Brought half our food and we waited 15 min for the other half. We asked what happened only to be barked at and told by Same waitress it wasn’t ready………THEN don’t bring it out until it IS READY! I am not sure if you are aware of this person and how she treats your customers, but LaVernia is small enough that word gets around. You will lose business because of her. I don’t care how good your food is, no one deserves to be treated in a rude...
