The food was delicious. It was absolutely incredible. The sad part was the service. Well, I was not keen on the ambiance. It was okay, very hipster, trendy vibe... and some people are really into that type of décor weird minimalist. Old looking furniture strange paintings on the wall. Definitely college town type of bar, which is fine. The part that was truly disappointing and upsetting was the service. There was a female bartender, and she appeared to be the only server as well. When we initially got there, it was not busy at all, and while we didn't get pleasant service, she was quick. I ordered a drink, and the drink literally tasted terrible. It tasted like chemicals. I told this to the server, and she took the drink away, noting that some people don't like the taste of the smoky mezcal that was in there. I was not offered a different drink or a remake or asked about what I might like sweet or otherwise, it was taken away. (I am a server, so I know the protocol when a customer is not satisfied with something that they've been served.) We uneventfully go through the meal and as it gets busier, we get little to no attention again, that's fine, I can deal with it.... she brings the bill, and the drink is still on the ticket. That surprised me because I had no idea that I was still being charged. However, I thought it was an honest mistake, since she had gotten a little busy, she might have forgotten. I went up to the bar and asked her about it. And told her I wanted to pay, and when I asked her about the drink she said, "Normally we don't do that because we took the time to make it so you should pay for it." I thought that was odd because the tip is what you get for the good service, not the payment of the actual item, which I only had 2 sips of... i asked her why then she didn't offer to remake it or suggest something different So that the charge would stay, but that I would be satisfied as a customer, and she just looked at me and continued working. Again, I understood that it was their policy, and I intended to pay for the drink, when she suddenly comes back with another receipt and goes, "here, I took it off" and kind of smacks it on the table, in an irritated fashion. I still gave her an 18% tip (although, as a server myself, I always leave more). Even though the service was not great, and the drink think was terrible, i gave her a fair tip. And I do have to say, again, the food was absolutely delicious. However, I don't think I will be dining there,...
Read moreIt's Saturday night in Lafayette Indiana. My wife and I are rolling into town for a well earned night out, first in months. We're looking a topshelf eclectic menu prepared by a 5 star kitchen and chef. Throw unique cocktails into the ask, and there's one place that rises above the rest. We popped into the sparrow, sitting at the bar (full social distancing rules in play) and immediately the bartender (giana the gifted) pulls a rabbit out of her hat making an impromptu spritzer perfect for my wife. The house red is an amazing value so I just asked for the bottle. Giana recommended a few of the specials and as I'd NEVER been disappointed with the food here, I took the suggestion and tried the pepperoni and fennel pizza. Wife got a sirloin in chantrell mushroom sauce. Pizza was great(a bit greasy from the pepand cheese) and her sirloin was more marbled than she expected but the flavors were exactly what one hopes for. Amazing flavors and different combinations. This is not a burger bar. Go here if you're looking for some great food, great friendly service, and a great old England pub style (with modern music)....
Read moreThe Atmosphere of The Black Sparrow is relaxed and pleasant. There is a bar area and a dining area. However, you must be 21 to go in. Even if just dinning. This is a great place to meet with friends or a date and eat, have some drinks, and actually talk. Servers are relaxed and very friendly.
Food has been hit or miss. Some food items have been great and others meh. However, I have never had anything that tasted bad. Food that I would recommend: The dates wrapped in bacon were unique, simple ingredients, and flavorful. The Mediterranean Salad was loaded with roasted potatoes, raw and cooked vegetables, and customized with your choice of protein. This was not a skinny girl salad! Very filling and flavorful. Chocolate Cake Served with raspberry sauce! The right combination of moisture and firmness so that the cake holds together with the homemade raspberry sauce. Just an amazing piece of cake! Foods I would skip; The margarita pizza. While it had very fresh ingredients, it was bland and the crust was too dry. The french fries were a big disappointment, they were similar...
