REMARKABLE RAMEN SPOT
I’ve been to this spot twice now and my husband three times. We both love how close to our house it is, the ample parking available, and the big menu it has in addition to the ramen. There really is something for everyone on this menu.
This is in the top 10 ramen shops in Portland for sure, but definitely not the top 5. Chashu pork is decent and their miso eggs are PERFECTION, but their broth is somewhat bland and lacking the depth I like to experience in a ramen. I would also like to see them using a more quality noodle such as Sun noodles, but maybe I’m in the minority there. If the noodles are Sun, they were over-cooked sogginess the time I didn’t get the crispy noods. I also would’ve appreciated the ramen broth temperature to be way hotter when served to me.
Per the server yesterday, they have several items on their appetizer menu that are housemade: Gyoza Takoyaki Karaage Tuna Corn Rolls Crab Rangoon PP Wings
Since I’m a sucker for housemade items, we went for the spicy karaage and it was delicious. I want to try the takoyaki, gyoza, or crab rangoons next time.
Hub’s drink was finished before the ramen came out and he was not offered another. He had to flag the server down to ask.
Restaurant was a tad dirty. Condiment caddy was dirty/oily, booth seat dirty, and mess on floor.
UPDATE JULY 2024 Much better service and cleanliness these last two visits. We tried their wings and they are PHENOMENAL. Khao Soi was mid due to stale noodles. My husband’s ramen noodles were not too soggy this time.
We keep coming back to this spot, as it’s the best ramen LO has to offer and their other dishes are pretty...
Read moreI'm coming to find that truly traditional style ramen isn't always my thing. I am not a huge fan of fishy flavors in my soup since the broth is a big factor in my experience. Note to self. "Order without Nori." I got the Tonkatsu bowl and I'm fairly certain on the menu it showed Shiitake mushrooms, but as far as I have experienced this is the Black Fungus or Wood Ear mushroom, which I don't particularly care for. (Maybe these are soy soaked or something, and I'm just a newb because) Aside from my own mistakes, I think the broth was nice, and the pork was good.
If you get the wings, they are fried to a nice and cripsy level that I like. It's not overcooked. The sauce is REALLY sticky, though. They really could use some wet wipes. I eventually just opted for a trip to the restroom to wash my hands.
The atmosphere was interesting. It's obviously an old taphouse converted to a ramen spot, so in that aspect, it was quite unique. They do have a lot of beer offerings in comparison to a traditional ramen spot. I didn't look over the beer menu to see what they do carry.
Service was sort of limited. Water. Order. Bill. No check-ins during dining. If there was, we would have been able to ask for extra napkins. We were able to flag down our server for another carafe of water. But that's becoming a...
Read moreI never bother to write review, but I have to write something this time. The service we received today was extremely disappointing. The lady was very impatient, almost rude to our group of 3 adults and 2 young kids, from start to finish. First, when I tried to confirm how many things we ordered, I was presented the device that she was taking orders, and was literally asked to check by myself. Then when the food came, she didn't bother to place the food next to the customers, instead she put all the bowls on one side of the table (a very long table) and I have to move them towards the family members by myself. In the end, when we look like we have finished our food, she almost rushed us out by saying "are you guys done?". I didn't complain during the visit as we have two young kids there so I didn't want to make a fuss about it. But still, this left a very bad taste, and almost make me felt like I have been biased, albeit ironically from one Asian to another. The food was okay though,...
