Rich and decadent sweets! But not for me!
The cupcakes are too rich and heavy with frosting. Like another reviewer stated you can't taste the soaked cake part of the cupcake bc there's too much frosting and it is extremely sweet! This is coming from someone with a major sweet tooth but I couldn't finish the cupcake cuz it was over bearingly sweet. Disappointed.
Ordered the pumpkin matcha for $6 it was very good! I am a matcha snob and it was definitely worth it, you could taste the pumpkin and the matcha. Highly recommend!
But not the coffee latte with eggnog it didn't taste like eggnog and the coffee flavor was super light, it was more of a slushie which surprised me since it said cold brew on the menu which I thought meant liquid coffee and eggnog with ice. They also coated the outside of the cup with some frosting and coconut flakes but it was messy with the flakes and frosting chipping off on my clothes. Not a bright idea. Line the INSIDE of the cup not the outside rim. Overall, don't recommend bc the flavor was not there. It is a decent price though for $4 something and change.
The crossiant pastries were good, the pumpkin spice one was my fav and the guava with cheese was good too, kinda pricey at $4 each. I think $3 is fair given the size of the pumpkin spice one which was smaller than the guava. The guava is fairly priced as it is bigger.
Nice decor inside, lots of seating, it was freezing inside, prob to prevent their cupcake frosting from melting, which made it unappealing to sit and dine in. Bummer.
Lastly, the customer service was lacking. The two ladies inside were staring at me the whole time and the one who took my order gave off a bit of an attitude. Her tone just sounded slightly annoyed and unenthusiastic to take my order. Customer service and the quality of the food/drink is always a big thing for me when it comes to returning to a certain dining place.
I docked one star because the way she took the order gave off a weird vibe as if I was bothering her and another star because of the coffee and too much frosting on the cupcakes. The coffee drink was lacking flavor and a slushie form which was not noted unless I missed it on the menu and the cupcakes were too overwhelming with frosting you couldn't taste the soaked part of the cupcake which is the whole point of me buying them. For all these reasons, I don't see a need to return.

Read moreReview from the Puerto Rican festival. I had been wanting to try this place, but they had a food truck at the festival so I got a taste of a couple things. I am of the opinion that the true quality of a restaurant is based on how they do the basic things. I had a limber de coco and a quesito de guayaba - the limber was AMAZING - real coconut in there, so much sabor, and so creamy and delicious. 10/10 - not super crazy expensive either. The quesito was also really, really good - most places I've tried in Chicago don't get the flakiness and pillowy texture of the pastry down, but Borinkén Cakes does. I agree with some other reviews that the amount of cream cheese is lacking, but it actually wasn't bad because of that, in my opinion, since it just wasn't as sweet, but you still got all the flavors. The price was a little much, though - 9/10 for the quesito. The next day I went back and tried their tripleta - WOW. Most people don't put well-seasoned and moist lechón in the sandwich because you can cover it up with sauce and toppings. But this lechón was next-level. The pastrami instead of bistek was a little unconventional, but in the end, it worked. There wasn't much mayoketchu, but the meat was so tender and juicy that you soon forget about that and just enjoy the pure flavors of the meat as it melts in your mouth. Bread was really good (they use pan sobao), and the presentation was cute. Now, $20 for a tripleta, I've seen close to that before, but this was TINY... Enough to barely make a meal, sure, with all the meat packed in there, but not close to what you'd expect for $20. I'll still give it a 9/10 just because the quality was so high that I wasn't upset about it. All that said, I look forward to going to their store and trying some bizcochitos, and I hope they live up to the quality of their...
