I gassed this place up for some friends only to go and be short sized ( i was stuffed the first time left hungry the second with friends).Go when the owner is there older , darker skin white hair) not the daughter (light skinned lady with stickers on her lap top with curly long gelled hair) . She'll "French it up" ( I heard her say it) your food and give you less portions for the same price.I ordered a quesabirria combo with consome but I guess I was given tacos the time before and when I complained about my order this time (I guess a quesabirra combo is one flat taco with two tortillas cut in fourths and a taco combo is two quesadillas folded like a taco?) she said it's the same portions but different style but clearly it wasn't. Point is how are you gonna sell one dish at one size but then resell it but smaller with in 4 days and act like the customer is crazy and say the other location this or that when it was the same location and I clearly heard her tell the cook "use the small tortillas not the big ones bc we're not using the big ones anymore " and also use way less meat and cheese for the same price. For $15.50 my meal went front an adult size to a kids size with in 4 days. Also how are you gonna ask us in spanish( we also spoken spanish)if it's our first time and I reply say it's not mine but it is my friends then a white dude that saw our food by the window walks in you ask him the same thing THEN he gets a free taco just like I did my first time?) .I also ordered something else and she said if it's to go ? Like we're still talking with our jackets off. Why would it be to go if we're here? Workers (except her) are great but she was totally on a different level. Totally different vibes when the owner is there compared to...
Read moreAfter several trips across Mexico, I thought I had tasted the best of birria but Birrieria Zaragoza proved me wrong. This family run spot offers authentic goat birria (yes, goat!), lovingly prepared in the traditional Jaliscan style from La Barca. And let me say it loud: this is easily the best birria I’ve ever had outside of Mexico. We tried almost everything on the menu: Tacos de birria, rich, juicy, deeply spiced Tacos de cabeza, crispy, tender, with an addictive smoky edge Quesadilla de birria, wrapped in fresh, handmade tortillas Every bite is bold and balanced a soft yet powerful dance between the earthy depth of goat, the brightness of their molcajete salsa, and the zing of their house consommé. It’s the kind of food that lingers with you, in the best possible way. What many people don't mention (but should!) is that: They make their masa fresh in house using traditional nixtamalization (a dying art in most of the U.S.). The original location (currently under repair after a fire) helped introduce real goat birria to Chicago when they opened in 2007, long before birria was trendy. They’ve received Michelin Bib Gourmand honors multiple times and you can absolutely taste why. The restaurant made a cameo in Season 3 of The Bear, highlighting its status as a local favourite. And yes, the staff is lovely, warm, welcoming, and clearly passionate about what they do. You feel it in every tortilla. Bonus tip: ask if they have the horchata de café, it’s spiced, smooth, and the perfect pairing. In short: if you're in Chicago and haven’t been to Birrieria Zaragoza, you’re missing one of the city’s true...
Read moreOk. We had birria tacos about over a year ago at Pilsen. This is our second time eating them. We love goat and lamb so we had lunch at this tiny place today. Well not sure where to start, people at the restaurant was as diverse as Chicago is. We had a plato grande which is enough for two if you sharing. It was a good amount of meat with all the toppings and tortillas. They looked like hand made tortillas, the smelled fresh and tasted amazing. The meat was tender and super flavorful. We not a single thing to complain about the plate. It was the best tacos we ever had no doubt about that. We got a consome which is the broth of the meat omg what and amazing broth. We did not finish that but we going to use it to make ramen with it for lunch hehehe. We had a cafe casero oh my goodness it was the perfect combo of coffee and spices we think it was cinnamon. My partner got horchata ice coffee not my cup of tea but he enjoyed it a lot. The place is small we didn't care. It was clean, it was busy, it was the perfect lunch. I hope this place stays open forever so we can enjoy lunch here as much as possible. The service was good every one is super nice. Attentive and friendly. The lady on front of us in the line she was like uh next time I will get this and that. And I want to try the whole menu. She was super excited. She was African-American, it was so nice to see that people are so welcoming to this kind of food. The price is right for the quality and amount of food. Thinking next time we will get it to go by pound. Yum!! I recommend to everyone that enjoys lamb or...
