Out the gate, you wanna come here for the tavern style pizza if that's your thing! Don't even bother flirting with anything else on the menu.
I also had the deep dish (on another trip), and it's quite 'decent', but it's more cheesy than anything, and you might benefit from ordering this with extra sauce.
The reason I gave this 4 stars is mainly because the service can be hit or miss at times. Either they're taking your order minutes after you're seated, or you're watching grass grow in real time. The service could certainly improve, especially when closing out a check.
There's PLENTY of space indoors and outdoor to dine, so this great if you're like me and hate being crammed next to random people because it's a 'hip' spot.
It's definitely a sports bar atmosphere, so be prepared for all the ESPN stations to be on at the same time. Not a big deal, just a heads up for those who might be going on a date and want vibe that doesn't feature a soccer game on the highest volume setting.
If you sit at the bar, brace to hear the loudest Mariachi music blasting from the kitchen area. After about 20 minutes or so, you start to adjust to the dissonance.
Definitely a top option for the Chicago Tavern Style Pizza, and they have multiple sizes too (also a plus). If you drive, be prepared to squeeze into some metered parking on Broadway in a hurry; absolutely no parking in this area.
They also open way earlier than other spots (11a), so if you need your pizza fix early, this is definitely the...
Read moreIt is unfortunate that the owner/manager has allowed not only Ruben to be unprofessional and dishonest with customers, be he is as well. We've been ordering Michael's for about a year now. They have messed up our order a few times. I know the the extra thin crust is goo but Giordanos has a good one as well with better customer service. Several months ago we ordered a deep dish sausage. The pizza was delivered burnt, the dough was gooey, the sausage was half cooked. Basically the pizza was not done all the way. I called to let them know, the owner/manager was so dismissive I almost had to ask him if he ever went to school to take a business course or a customer service course. I realize not everyone should have a business, but an uncooked deep dish pizza, come on. He didn't want us to return the pizza and told us he will give us a new one. Now clearly deep dish is not their thing. He didn't offer to give us a new pizza for free the same day, we had to purchase a brand new pizza, while he left the awful deep dish in his system as a free one. I asked him if we could have a thin crust in its place and he wouldn't let us. We just paid for a new pizza instead. I found the owner to be the most ignorant person I have ever had a conversation with in a restaurant. He refuse to take responsibility and didn't even own the mistake that was made even after I offered to send him pictures. Other reviews to follow. I had more than...
Read moreClassic spot. Great Chicago atmosphere and excellent service. The Italian Beef was very good and the highlight of the visit. The thin-sliced beef was doused with cheese and served with the au jus. Very good (I cheated and had a bite - had to taste!). We also got mozzarella sticks which were devoured by the table instantly. Hot and melty with warm marinara. Hot crinkle cut fries for the table. Finally, we ordered a deep dish pizza and filled up on one slice each. We basically shared everything and it was plenty of food for 2 adults and 3 young kids. We took 3 slices of the deep dish home. Beer selection was okay and it seemed like drinks were flowing! TVs everywhere with Cubs audio through the overhead speakers during gametime.
I am by no means a deep dish expert so please take what I am about to say knowing I have had incredible pizza - mostly thin crust - in NYC for most of my adult life and this was my first deep dish pizza experience in Chicago. The pizza was not that good. The sauce was too sweet and not enough flavor, and the dough overwhelmed the dish with a flavor that tasted like it was out of a pilsbury can. No cheese flavor at all although I could definitely see cheese! If this is one of the best examples of Chicago deep dish, I will stick with my NY and Sicilian-style pizza I get back home. Will definitely try it again but somewhere else. Stick with the excellent beef sandwich...
