Finally got around to trying the hottest boba spot in Long Beach/Lakewood.
I visited the spot twice and lined up 30min before opening and I still had to wait an hour for the drinks post opening time (3PM) on a Wednesday and Friday.
First Visit: Taiwanese Milk Tea with Boba, Daydream Black Tea Latte with Almond Pudding, Grandma's Fruit Tea, and Geisha Peach Black Tea Latte with Osmanthus Oolong Tea Jelly
Second Visit: Taiwanese Milk Tea, Geisha Peach Black Tea Latte and Earl Grey Latte
I can honestly say this is one of the best boba spots around. I've gone through Orobae, Omomo, etc. And I must say this spot is comparable.
The tea flavors are strong and prominent. The puddings are true to its flavors. I just didn't like the almond pudding because it tasted too artificial like Jergens Almond Cherry lotion.
Geisha Peach was great and milk with a strong peach flavor. The tea is still strong. The osmanthus jelly is a great pairing with it because it gives that lingering tea flavor! It is sweet enough.
My favorite though is the Taiwanese milk tea. It's the best I've tasted around and it's strong and creamy. The boba is also QQ!
I didn't really like grandma's Fruit Tea. It's really tart and I couldn't taste the tea itself. This is despite the fact that it's at 100% sweetness.
The Earl Grey Latte tasted the same as others, so it's generic.
Daydream didn't really taste much of a tea.
Thai Tea pudding was amazing, so I recommend it with another milk tea.
I recommend for you to come in 30/45mins before opening on weekday. I also recommend for you to research your drinks and write down your orders ahead, so it's a faster process at the register. People order 4+ drinks here, so be prepared...
Read moreCame here after seeing it all over social media. We waited in line for 3 hours. It doesn't seem like the store or staff is prepared or well equipped for their sudden increase in popularity.
After waiting in line and finally getting inside the doors, we noticed only one employee taking orders, while the rest of the staff was in the back kitchen preparing all the orders.
I also immediately noticed was its retro vibes and the aesthetic felt very much like a traditional East Asian medicine herbalist. This is a vibe that I feel was very much intentional, but it is yet a unique, but very matching theme that makes sense.
I went with a group of 4, and, due to the wait, we decided to be courteous for others and order as one group as opposed to separately, but the wait for drinks increased the total wait time, as I believe we waited 20+ minutes for our drinks to arrive.
Immediately, I was disappointed that the drinks did not come out exactly as they did on social media, including their own. I think they should put a disclaimer because I assumed most, if not all the drinks would at least come out in a clear cup so that we would be able to take pictures.
That being said, I ordered the Daydream Latte with matcha jelly/pudding, while my sister ordered something with sesame jelly, and her two friends ordered a Daydream Latte with Thai Tea jelly and another ordered the Divine Awakening with matcha jelly.
Overall I enjoyed my drink and I loved the matcha pudding, my sister loved her drink, but thought the sesame jelly was way too strong, and so did I.
I would like to come back to try the matcha latte as well, but maybe when all this social media...
Read moreThank god the hype caused by going viral on TT died down. When I first wanted to come, I happened to be in the area and was craving boba and gmaps led me here. Except then I saw that line. I actually read some of the reviews with people saying they waited over an hour. WHAT.
I don't care if you've fooled yourself into loving it because you needed to justify that you wasted an hour of your life in line in boba because of FOMO from social media, no boba is worth it. And I love this place.
Anywho, since the hype has died down, I can say this place is definitely worth a visit. It gave me time to chat with the cashier about what she liked, what she recommended, if I got this jelly with this tea, does that make sense, etc. She was even kind enough to grab me a sample of the osmanthus jelly (which is now my favorite).
I will say that if you get the osmanthus tea latte...it won't be worth it. Osmanthus is so delicate, the milk will kill the delicacy (lesson learned), so it will mostly taste like watered down milk. The osmanthus jelly does hold up well against the darker Day Dream Black Tea Latte though, which was surprising.
A friend didn't love Hechalou as much as I did, but she ordered Taiwanese milk tea here which...I just wouldn't recommend doing. You can get that almost anywhere else.
The reason I love Hechalou (better than chicha3000) is that their tea quality is better. So order the more unique teas here for the quality and add the jellies to your boba (personal preference is brown sugar boba...
