I have eaten at cattle barons before and was happy at other locations. This one was not very good at all. First, we came in and no real greeting just how many in your party. They advised it would be a 25 minutes wait even though there were plenty of tables open. After thirty minutes, we were sat at one of the open tables we saw near the front. We waited for ten minutes with no one greeting us. Finally I asked if we could get our server, who was a lady that had walked by us several times. We ordered waters to start. After ten more minutes and her very attentively going to the booths around us several times, I stopped her and asked if we could get our waters. She said yes and brought them about five minutes later. We placed our orders and the food actually came out pretty quick. While we were waiting my wife had the salad bar. She said everything tasted old, not fresh. Our food was cooked correctly to temp but was very bland. The steaks had no seasoning. The next time we saw our waitress was when she handed us our bill, which was an electronic tablet that she stood over me as I filled it out. Needless to say we won’t be back to this location. Very disappointing experience. Just wanted to add to my review that I received a response to my original review; however, the response only directed me to a generic complaint site for their corporate office that apparently no one responds to. No response received from the actual management from the restaurant. ...
Read moreWe stopped in while driving thru town. First impression was that it looks like an overly westernized hotel restaurant. From the items on the wall to the flagstone service areas.
We ordered some green chile wontons to start. First off, I don’t think that oil is supposed to be brown. The drops of brown oil dripping from the wontons onto the plate wasn’t very appetizing. They bring 2 dipping sauces; one is a ranch dressing dip & the second is kind of like a pot sticker sauce that was cold. Perhaps a hot mustard & red sweet & sour sauce would be better? Also the centers were like biting into a piece of cold cheese instead of a warm gooey center. We definitely did not eat them all.
The bread was tasty with the soft melty butter. We then ordered some prime rib that was a bit burnt on the outside and was chewy. The horseradish sauce could have used some more kick. It looked like ranch dressing.
We also ordered the New York steak Manhattan cut with a sweet potato. It looked like we ordered the kids meal. A dinky sweet potato and a wedge of overcooked steak with no other vegetables. Also $4.95 for a salad added to your meal? That’s a bit excessive in my book.
Luckily we were just passing thru because I won’t be returning even though the bill was only about $62 for...
Read moreThe Las Cruces food tour continues! Really had higher hopes for this particular restaurant, being an exclusively steak restaurant. As far as good steak goes, most great steak restaurants pay careful attention to the quality of everything around the steak to ensure it is up to par. As far as whiskey goes, it's very limited in the brands they offer, they also do not offer any baseball or cube ice, which is a natural pairing for any whiskey. Some of their best tequilas are Jose Cuervo products, again a huge miss. They tout the massive salad bar, which is more akin to a Golden Corral rather than a top tier quality steakhouse. The steak itself is okay, however I had to make sure that I asked for real butter, over margarine. Margarine is a severe no-no to any steak fan. The service was pretty simple, not that they didn't do a good job, they just didn't seem very excited to be there, again a huge letdown in a place that should have had a lot more energy. I have to point to a new restaurant, Bubba's 33, which absolutely murder it on all three phases; service, steak quality, and drink selection. All for less cost than what was paid for the meal I had at Steak Baron. Especially in a town like Las Cruces that has tons of great restaurants, this one fell far below...
