I'm always looking for a good cheesesteak and had heard this place was really good. There's a newer place in south jersey that's getting a lot of attention for their cheesesteaks, so I wanted to try here to compare. I won't name the other place as I'm not affiliated and not trying to advertise for anyone. Meatheadz is pretty good, but they come in second place to the competition.
I started my order with the Meatheadz wings, but the girl at the counter couldn't tell me what the sauce was made of. I wasn't asking for a detailed recipe, but being able to know if it's chili based, vinegar based, similar to buffalo sauce shouldn't have been difficult to answer. The wings were a good size and cooked well, but the sauce was completely separate from the wings. I'd describe the sauce as a mix of ranch, bbq, and buffalo, and the consistency was runny and didn't coat the wings. Think about it like putting Rain-X on your windshield and the water sheds away. That's how the sauce was for the wings. They also didn't have cups of blue cheese, but instead offered the little packs of Ken's blue cheese like you would get at WaWa. When you're charging over $18 for a dozen wings, the least you can do is have decent blue cheese to go with it. If they don't want to make their own in house, the jarred variety from the food service companies is passable.
The cheesesteaks can come on a regular or seeded roll, and you can upcharge it to garlic bread. To make it a fair comparison to the other spot that uses a garlic spread, I opted for the garlic bread. It's included in the price at the other place. The sandwich was served with a generous amount of meat and cheese, but the garlic just had an odd sweetness that I couldn't get past. I'm well aware that garlic gets sweeter when roasted, but that's not what I'm talking about here. It seemed artificially sweet beyond what I've ever had anywhere else. While I prefer garlic bread rolls, it's not something I'd order from here again.
The order was taken as carryout, and all of the food was packaged neatly and the order was accurate. The gentleman that brought it out of the kitchen was also courteous and assured me that the order was correct. The onion rings were crisp.
The end of my experience was not stellar. I ordered 2 chocolate milkshakes at $9 each, and couldn't wait to try it as soon as I got in my truck. The consistency was extremely thin, and drank like regular chocolate milk with some whipped cream on top. I wouldn't buy another at $3, let alone the $9 I was charged. The other issue occurred when examining my receipt. They put a surcharge on the bill for paying with a card instead of cash. I saw no signage stating this policy, nor was this conveyed by the girl working the register. It's just bad business. I worked for years in restaurants, and also have years of experience running a successful business. I understand inflation, credit card service charges, etc. It's part of the cost of doing business, especially in a society that increasingly is using less cash. Some business owners are quick to defend the policy, but I'll offer you a different way of thinking about it. The charge was $4 or so, but it made my final impression of trying you something negative. Is that the impression you want to give customers? You recouped $4 and change with the BS fee, but I feel duped and don't see me returning because of it. Was $4 worth losing future orders? Just something...
Read moreThis was my 1st time eating at Meatheadz, and we did so based on reviews. I had a couple of friends visiting from Florida and he was in the mood for a good cheesesteak, and normally I would have gone into Philadelphia to go to either Pats or Gino’s, which is where I normally go to for a good cheesesteak. On the Saturday night that we were looking to do this, the weather was terrible, so I looked up good cheesesteaks near me and that’s how I chose MeatheadZ.. I had no idea this place was so close to me, and that I hadn’t discovered it before now. Anyways the atmosphere in the store was very nice and clean and the people at the register that took the order were Very cool and patient as we were deciding on what to order. We did have to wait quite some time for the order to be prepared, and there was a slight issue with the order, but after getting to eat the food It was clearly obvious this was my new spot! I have to tell you that I spoke with one of the owners named Jeff, and Jeff restored my faith in small business owners in this country! He went out of his way to make sure that everything was made right, and that our 1st experience at Meathaedz wouldn’t be our last. In fact the food was so good that I am thrilled to proclaim; I never have to go into Philadelphia again for the best cheesesteaks in the world. Meatheadz is now my Favorite go to spot for Great Cheesesteaks! I just want to tell Jeff…. Thanks for the great lengths you went to make my experience a Great one! I will be visiting you guys a lot more often, and save money on gas & tolls to...
Read moreFirst time at the new location 9/17/23 I think they did a great job on the look and ambience. Ample seating and I liked the seating bar at the window for solo peeps. I ordered a regular cheesesteak with lettuce tomato and mayo. It was pretty busy but I got my sandwich and self served soda pretty quickly. The sandwich was packed with meat which was chopped up and in my opinion a bit much but hey some people love that and hey you are getting your moneys worth. I don’t think there was any mayo on the sandwich and I could not see any cheese. The manager was walking around and was asking how everything was which I though was very cool. I asked if there was cheese on ther and maybe I couldn’t see it ? he said there was cheeze Wiz on it but had to look closely to tell? He nicely brought me over more wiz which again that stuff has no flavor and has no business being called Cheese or Cheez!! I did not know I had an option of provolone or sharp American which I would have taken. I think the roll with that much meat needs to be a little “hardier” as it got pretty sloppy. I was up charged3.95% 0.75 for using credit but I used cash and did not realize until I looked at receipt when I got home. I was charged 1.00 for tomato??? And 1.00 for lettuce??? I have never seen that before and think it’s pretty ridiculous. Total for cheesesteak with a soda 22.00. I think a bit much for lunch. I am going to try again with the provolone and or sharp American because I think these guys work pretty hard at trying to...
