Being that this place is new I will come back again maybe a year or so into the future when the staff has had time to learn their menu and how to cook it. That being said my experience last night was laughable to say the least. My server took my order which was the chicken bento box with FRIED RICE and my boyfriend and I split a CRUNCHY ROLL which on the menu was shrimp tempura, krabstick, avocado and cream cheese deep fried, he got the steak bento box with fried rice. After she took his order she asked me a 2nd time white or fried rice and I said fried. We got our soup and salad and the soup was super bland, usually you can taste the onion and ginger but it was overly watered down, the salad was nice and cold and the dressing wasnt the usual ginger dressing but decent. Then our bento boxes came out and I had white rice even though I said twice fried rice, which is fine honest mistake, I wasn't even upset I think she just wasn't understanding me very well as talking to her she seemed confused the whole time, she was very cute and sweet I think she was just new and nervous, so she brings out the fried rice and my sushi roll which ended up being a tuna roll instead of the crunch roll, I felt terrible calling over who I assume was a manager over and explaining it was not the right sushi and I didn't want the waitress to get in trouble and she said "it's okay she's new we apologize she confused it with the super crunchy roll let me double check the menu and I'll be right back" she went to the front to look through the menu and was telling the girls up front what was going on, another women that she just spoke to walked up and said "oh why haven't you touched your sushi?" Which I thought was strange as I just watched the other woman tell her what happened, so I told her it was wrong and she said okay we'll fix it. They brought me another sushi roll which was not deep fried, nor was it the crunchy roll, it was a shrimp tempura roll. I didn't even complain I just laughed but considering the price of the meal I almost regret not doing so but I hate to be a burden or rude so I just accepted it.The bento box was okay honestly not a whole lot of flavor, came with a California roll that was good but you can never go wrong with that, the crab rangoons were definitely lacking, and they were cold, I think the because the chili sauce was cold. My boyfriends steak was super flavorless, my chicken was okay, and the rice tasted liked eggs. We also got the fried ice cream for dessert which was good but I wish It was crunchy like other restaurants I've been it was very soggy and it wasn't that the ice cream was melted it was just the way they make it I think. Our bill ended up totatling out to $69 and some change before tip which we never spend at any other restaurant like this and we leave very pleased with lots of leftovers but unfortunately that was not the case here. It seems that they just need more time to adjust to the menu or maybe the language barrier was the issue, as I said above it seemed like my waitress and the other two ladys were not fully comprehending what I was saying a few times which would better explain why even after saying more than once what I wanted (the fried rice and crunchy roll that I never even got to try). Hopefully when we go back in a year or so they will have better knowledge of the menu and it will actually be worth...
Read moreWe had dinner here last night. Considering the price point of drinks and food, dinner for two with tip was $100, we were expecting everything to be pretty spot on but it was uneven. My husband was cold so he went home to get a jacket, we live at LAL behind the plaza. The waitress took our drink order, wine for me and hot sake for hubby, and I told her he would be right back. She was nice enough to wait until he returned to being the hot sake. We ordered crab Rangoon and a Rock and Roll roll sushi for appetizers and two shrimp and vegetables tempura for the main. The waitress said she would bring the crab Rangoon and sushi roll together first. The crab Rangoon arrived, but not the sushi. She forgot and when we called her over she went and found the sushi roll. Very shortly thereafter the soup and salad arrived before hubby had time to really enjoy the sushi roll. The shrimp and vegetables tempura arrived very quickly after that with enormous soup bowls of white rice. Timing was off. The crab Rangoon was average, nothing special. The miso soup was ok and the salad was nice and crisp and cold with a flavorful dressing. The Rock and Roll sushi was average, nothing special. The presentation of the Shrimp and Vegetables Tempura was very nice, and the portions were large, but the tempura had not a speck of salt or seasoning in the batter. Very bland and a disappointment. The timing of service and the seasoning issues are troublesome for a restaurant at this price point. We will give this place one more time to see if last night was typical or atypical. Note, my husband is a classically trained CIA chef and I also worked in food service front of the house for a...
Read moreThe first-time visit was well worth it. The Kawachi restaurant is tucked into the inside corner of the Lake Village shopping center.
We arrived for lunch on a Tuesday right at noon, not too many people, maybe only one half dozen. The restaurant is much larger than I expected. I was expecting a hole in the wall due to its location, so a pleasant surprise. The interior has an open ceiling with a colorful glitzy decor, which isn't overdone. The menu's first four pages are devoted to alcohol reflecting their full bar offerings. Their is a small section for Thai food, but it had a sticker "Not Available."
Still, there are plenty of choices and a very generous sushi selection. My wife was delighted to see Blue Hawaii as an alcohol choice. So many bars have no clue what a Blue Hawaii is/was, so she was over the top that they had one.
Onto the food. My wife ordered a sweet potato roll and the lobster roll. I ordered the green dragon and the chicken hibachi bento lunch box with a Blue Moon to wash it down. Everything was well timed from the soup & salad to our meals. The presentation was excellent and everything delicious. The rolls are top notch.
Compared to other local Japanese/Sushi restaurants, Kawachi may be one or two dollars more on some offerings, but there are no disappointments. The restaurant and especially the restrooms are very clean and neat. The service was excellent from start to finish. We'll be...
