THE END OF AN ERA Hungry from shopping, I took the two women in my company to Steak 'n Shake. I hadn't been since moving to Mount Dora from Orlando and wanted to share the experience with one of my companions who had never been. She wanted to go through the drive-thru. I had to convince her the experience was worth going inside. Boy, was I wrong. Steak 'n Shake was created to be reminiscent of more service-oriented times and Flat-Grill Shake Shacks with personality. There's none of that here. None at all. I walked in expecting to be seated, or at least told we could sit wherever we liked. Not only did that not happen, we were not greeted at all, by anyone. The familiar sign that used to say, "Please wait to be seated," now said, "Please order at the kiosk." Seriously? No host or hostess. No menus. No wait staff. No greeting. I spent entirely too long at the kiosk, ordering for myself and my two companions, not being able to select certain condiments for certain burgers, fully selectable for other burgers, finally settling on reasonable facsimiles thereof. I had a $50 gift card to burn (in my possession over a year without being used) and wanted to use the whole thing on this trip, already disappointed with the decay of one of my favorite establishments. Unfortunately, there was no way to use the gift card at the kiosk, even though I was told it could be scanned. A manager had to come and take my order manually to be entered in a special manner back in the office. So... I had to begin the order process again, and call on my female companions again, to repeat their desired toppings and such. After ordering a second time and joining my companions at the booth, the first-timer quipped, "Oh... This is a lovely restaurant. Is this what you wanted me experience?" Our food was not brought to us, it was dropped on a counter and my name was called to pick it myself and serve my companions, which they enjoyed as much as I didn't. Gone, were the thick ceramic plates upon which my food used to be served at Steak 'n Shake. Gone, were the plastic cups for soda and tea. Gone, was the real silverware. Instead, our burgers were "served" in thin plastic baskets with wax paper linings; our drinks in paper cups that we served ourselves; our napkins and service hunted down and self-given. The only original hangers-on, as far as I could tell, were the shake glasses; real glass and thick just like they used to be. My first shake was dropped at the counter as well, without a spoon. They still HAVE long shake spoons, I found out later with my to-go shakes; but, they're plastic now. I accepted a regular plastic spoon from one of my companions, who interrupted her own meal to retrieve one for me from the self-service "everything counter." The meals: Our fries were cold. Those little thin fries from Steak 'n Shake were never the hottest; but, ours were cold. The onion rings were a little warmer; but, also not hot. Not my biggest concern here. Check out my photos, taken right there, at the booth. Steak 'n Shake burgers have always been thin. That's part of their charm. They spread out over the whole bun, though, hanging over all the edges. This burger, pictured, is criminal. It is so thin it could not complete the tiny circle it was intended to be. For real. It's thinner than the unmelted slice of cheese atop it. At this point, I was devastatingly embarrassed to have even suggested Steak 'n Shake as option. The pictured burger was for my companion I have referred to as a first-timer. Of course, a return was initiated and the staff remade her entire order; however, she was not able to eat with the rest of us and hers was to-go. I also got two shakes to-go, just to burn the gift card and never have to return. Those were awesome. Character...
Read moreI will NEVER EVER come to this location again! So I arrived in the drive though at 11:41 pm tonight (08/10/18) & there are about 6 vehicles ahead of me & I noticed inside there are 2 tables (Already with food) so I assume this won’t take long at all.....25 mins go by & the cars have only moved up twice & its 12:07pm & still nothing!! I finally get tired of waiting in line, I drive around and go inside to wait where there are multiple people waiting on their orders who were also stuck in the drive thru. A woman (Jackie O) walks up & asks if I’m ready to order and I explained to her that I just sat in the drive thru for almost 30 mins & she says “Our drive thru isn’t working” so I place my order (It’s now 12:34pm) with her which was ONLY 2 Milkshakes (Choc Pnut Cup & Choc Banana) After waiting 18 mins I finally get my milkshakes which both were terrible, watery and wrong! My boyfriend demanded I return them but I didn’t want to wait another hour just to receive our order. We love coming here for the food & milkshakes but the service, staff & management is horrible! Management doesn’t ever care that any of us waited 30 mins in drive thru just to be told “It isn’t working properly”. The inside of the restaurant is always a disaster..tables full of dirty dishes, floors covered with food & trash. Staff standing around talking. Tonight was the last time I will ever come back to...
Read moreIf i could give a no stars and post a review i would. First my family and i walk in and wait to be seated as the sign says. 2 young ladies walked past us & didnt even acknowledge us, one finally stopped after she heard me say how long we stood there, and seated us. The table was soaked wet from just being wiped down with what smelled a like a dirty wash cloth that sat in dirty water allll day. Then i asked the waitress to bring us waters with our shakes and a coke for myself. Never got the waters and never offered a refill on my soda. We had to suck on the thick shakes with our burgers. She then began to place her whole body on our table as if resting from a long day right where we were going to eat and infront of my husbands seating just to take our orders. I then asked for 2 cups of chilli that came in togo containers with plastic spoons, it was so cold the cheese wouldnt melt. I told her and she never offered to bring us hot ones. We had no silverwear so we ate our fries that we put ketchup on with our hands. My son never got his bbq sauce, we had to wave down another waitress to bring us ketchep and napkins. Management nowhere in site. I could go on & on but ill stop here and just end it with, ill never go back to many young employees that arent...
