Read moreThe bento soup is sold as a clear soup, but it’s not an osuimono made from dashi, nor is it very clear in color. It’s better described as a beef consommé, which is something of an odd choice to have before sushi. It also tastes like it makes from bouillon. The servers were confused when I asked if the clear soup was clam based. Ushiojiru is a very common clear soup and shouldn’t be a foreign concept to a “Japanese” restaurant…also they kept asking us if we were ready to order. It was our first time and they have a large menu, we needed time to look it over and I felt rushed.
The rolls are huge, which is a plus for a lot of people. But it’s not bite sized and unwieldy to eat. The rice was made with too much water and had a gummy texture, and not enough vinegar to really be considered sushi rice. The toro was nice and fatty.
I would have liked to try the uni, but they couldn’t tell me if it was from Hokkaido or Santa Barbara (much less if it were bafun or murasaki). I personally wouldn’t eat uni when you don’t know where it comes from. Also, the price of the nigiri is insane. $15 for ikura?! At that price you may as well order toro nigiri.
If you really like sushi, avoid Lexington altogether. Maybe the hibachi is the star here. But this place falls into the common American misconception that sushi is fish, when sushi refers to the vinegared rice itself. Number one concern must be the rice- many chefs spend years perfecting that skill alone. South Carolinian sushi chefs as a whole would benefit from paying more attention...
Read moreSaw a post about this place and the reviews were great so we wanted to try it out. My son and I went Monday evening. I arrived around 5:30, and was sat immediately. It was 20 minutes before I was given a menu and asked if I’d like a drink, I was not even acknowledged prior to that after being seated. The food arrived timely, except we weren’t given the sauces that come with the bowls until about 10 minutes after we got them and I had to stop another server to ask for them, by that time they were cold. Ordered another drink when I ordered my meal, which was also not brought until I asked another server for it. my son’s tea sat empty until we requested a refill. Our server did not even look at our table after the food was delivered. We sat for 30 minutes after we had finished trying to get someone to stop so we could request boxes and dessert. Our server avoided us completely, even when I said “excuse me” when she walked by. After stopping someone again and requesting a box for the second time (we had given up on dessert at this point), I requested to pay. At this point, a different server, who was not our server (again she never acknowledged us again after the food was delivered) came to check us out. I am extremely disappointed. I understand they were busy, but it is not a large restaurant and 3 servers should be able to accommodate, if not, a manager should have been present to help. The food was decent, but nothing spectacular and certainly not authentic in any way. The dining experience overall was very poor and we will...
