A birthday celebration gone wrong ! When they sat us down the sat a party of 6 with a reservation at a round table next to the window. It was cramped but the issue was the curtains and the window. This was at 6:30 pm at night. These curtains made you feel so claustrophobic as they were literally touching you and Pretty much swallowing you up into them. After sitting down I had pushed them aside so I did not feel like I was literally getting eaten by the curtain. Soon as I did, the Karen”s at the table across the from us freaked out and did not like the sun near their face. They immediately told the staff to shut the curtains. They literally came up behind me without telling me anything. They were trying to shut these curtains back onto me and didn’t even tell me anything. I still felt claustrophobic and push them back, but it was rude that they didn’t even tell me what was going and to cater to these women, but not think about me. We ordered the frozen Rosé. The waitress told us it was the frozen rose however, the drink did not have any mint in. It did not have any strawberries nor was it the color of rosé. It looks like a melted down margarita and tasted like a melted margarita. She did not even offer to switch it out for something else. For appetizers we ordered two pizzas and a burrata salad for me and my husband to split since he has a gluten allergy. The pizza was the worst pizza I have ever tasted. it tasted like it had come from a cardboard box and it lacked flavor and seasoning. The burrata salad costed a total of $24. When it showed up It came on two plates. On a bed of greens that was the size of water glass opening. On top of our salads was 1 Brussel sprout each. And 2 pieces burrata that was the size of 2 quarters. My husband salad had not burrata in it at all so I gave him one of my quarter size pieces.
my husband has a gluten allergy but not by choice. he had made the staff aware of this when we first got there. When he was ordering his gluten-free pasta, he had asked if he can get the entrée in which they put the pasta in the wheel to make it cheesy. She Explained because of cross Contamination, we weren’t able to mix it in the wheel. , she said that they could top it with cheese a and melt it, and it would be the same aspect. When dinner arrived there was no cheese on his pasta. There was so much pasta water in the bowl it was like soup. They also decided to mix gluten free pasta with regular pasta in the same bowl. It was not like a few pieces it was more 1/2 regular pasta and 1/2 gluten free. After my husband spent the time picking out regular pasta for the dish he told the waitress what was wrong. She said that they can make him a brand new dish that had 100% gluten and that they could take it back and put cheese on the new dish and no pasta water in the bottom. When the manager came back with the new dish he apologized for the issue and said that he would take the dish off the bill. He also brought a cup of Parmesan cheese. I guess that was there version of Parmesan cheese. Once again the dish had so much water it was like soup. we had asked the waitress if this was normal and she said yes because they add pasta water to the dish. So then when my husband added the cheese it was pretty much a dish with gluten free pasta, peas, prosciutto, and watered down cheese. he did not even eat it because it was so disgusting. When the bill came the dish was never removed from the bill. Also to mention the salad some one ordered in our party came with no dressing. When we asked about dressing they never returned with it. My pasta dish was watery sauce with 3 pieces of chicken in the whole dish.
We were just looking to enjoy a nice birthday dinner, but it turned into a birthday disaster. based on our experience, I would never recommend this place to anyone. I would never come back to give it a second chance and if I could, I would give it zero stars. learn how to train and educate staff better so issues like this will not happen...
Read morePretty disappointed in our evening here tonight. I made the reservation through Open Table and specifically mentioned it was our Anniversary, and that we would like to have a quiet, out of the way table. The Manager and Hostess either had no clue that it was a special occasion or they just didn't care. I can't say which. We arrived at 6:15p & told them our reservation was for 7p, but would like to have a drink at the bar - bartender was great and the bar was quieter than the restaurant. Hostess never came to check on us - we just paid our tab & then told them we were ready to be seated. Granted Carlucci's is located in a hotel, but it's been there for years and has always had a great reputation. We were seated at an average table by the window - nothing special, not out of the way as I had requested, and certainly not quiet. (There's a round table of eight kitty corner from us). We were given water when we were seated and then waited easily 15 minutes before our waiter finally came over. He was quiet and polite but certainly not the type of service you would expect from a restaurant of this caliber. He was definitely inexperienced. Our entrees were delivered literally a minute after my husband excused himself to go to the men's room, and there they sat until he returned. Delivered by a kitchen expeditor, sitting there getting cold until my husband returned. For reference, the restrooms are quite a hike from the restaurant. I would have thought that someone would have come over and have the sense to ask if I wanted a cover or to take the entrees back to the kitchen to keep them warm until my husband returned. Nothing. I had to ask for a steak knife for him and a replacement knife for myself. When our server asked us if we wanted to see the dessert menu I knew right away he had no clue it was our Anniversary. Such a disappointment. Food was excellent - this is the reason for the compromise of 3 stars - We shared an octopus and shrimp special appetizer that was incredible and my husband had the Costelette di Manzo (braised short rib w/ garlic mashed & a barolo sauce - amazing! I had the special grouper & shrimp w/ garlic mashed & asparagus. Absolutely wonderful although a little heavy on the butter. $200 for an appetizer, 2 entrees & a bottle of wine - I would expect...
Read moreThis was our trip to Chicago from Ohio, we wanted to have one special dinner for the trip, we chose Carlucci's. I expected a great service and authentic Italian food. But the first impressions really stick with me. Our waiter didn't smile, he seems "bored" almost like he was at the end of his shift and wanted the day to be over already. He asked if we wanted any alcohol, and when we said no, he almost lost all interest in us. When I asked about the details of each meal, he simply said to read the description, like as if it was a dumb question. Every time he came by, it was short and blunt, like I'm at a New York Hot dog stand or something. I had to cheer him up with a few jokes just to get him to smile and show signs of life. That should be his job not mine. Carlucci's did not give of fine dinning feel. Even the valet was lethargic, slowly walked over to get our car, I had to pull up to him twice to get his attention when we arrived. I've seen more enthusiasm in a Chilly's before. Every Italian restaurant I've ever been to, gives you water and bread right away, we had to wave down a server to give us bread. Again, didn't seem like they really wanted us there, almost as if they wrote us off as "bad tippers" since we didn't want alcohol. The Bread was sort of dry and flavorless, I needed lots of oil and salt to make it taste like anything. During the meal, I picked the Radiatori, which was said to have a creamy sauce...I had a plate with a soup like sauce, I had to add a lot of cheese just to make it creamy and more flavorful. There was barely any chicken on the plate. I wouldn't be this critical, except it's hyped up online as one of the finest Italian places in Chicago, I just didn't see it or taste it. I only share all this, to hopefully help the restaurant fix whatever needs to be fixed, I'm sure there's plenty of good reviews, but our time was below...
