If you cannot travel to Afghanistan, THIS is your next best option. You know it’s quality when even the “basic” basmati is flavorful, soft, and evenly separates.
We will 100% be back again, even as we live 2+ hours away.
The service is fantastic. You are given menus at the front, take a seat, and then order at the front when ready. A very gracious host, easy and precise ordering, helpful selection & quantity advice, and squeaky clean throughout. Bathrooms are solid, nothing out. Honestly never had to get out of seats for anything: it’s excellent service.
Overall, absolutely delicious, tangy, and spiced thoroughly across all fronts. We had the Badenjon Buranee (eggplants w/ spiced & yogurt—well-cooked, tangy, great to dip your bread in), Bolanee (delicious fried bread stuffed with potatoes and leeks—a favorite now and comes with a spicy chutney and a ranch-like sauce), Mast-o-Khair (adds a nice cucumber yogurt condiment, akin to raita, to all the main courses—maybe get two for bigger parties). Then for mains, Chapli Kabob, Chicken Kabob, and the falafel wrap. The first two had rice sides, the latter had French fries.
The entrees were well-spiced (though not necessarily spicy), the meat was well-cooked especially the chicken’s char and pull-apart texture, the basmati was top-tier, and the presentation is fantastic (see pictures below). The Chapli Kabob was also quite good: spiced, break-apart texture, and filled with some vegetables actually too.
I had the falafel and it was about the best falafel wrap I’ve had in ages. Toasted wrap with a soft inside, onions, cilantro, and this tasty green sauce. The falafel itself tasted authentic and tasty. Fries were fantastic—crispy on the outside, soft on the inside; I threw on a little salt to taste. I’ve been to dedicated Mediterranean restaurants with far inferior falafel wraps, so this was a very happy surprise. Loved the vegetables inside and the sauce, plus this was actually one of the cheapest items!
For everything, portions are very sizeable, excluding maybe the Badenjon Buranee (6 slices of eggplant). Everything else is easily shareable among 2 people, even the large falafel wrap. We were getting full even when the appetizers were wrapping up.
We finished up with cardamom black tea. They were so kind to give one to each in our party, even though we only ordered one. It was brewed in a samovar right in front. Pristine black tea (green tea is also available) and the warmth + cardamom make it feel like home again.
We would’ve gotten dessert if we weren’t stuffed. That baklava out front was calling...
Read moreI truly don’t like doing bad reviews, so this was tough. Always looking for something authentic and not commercial. This place seemed promising. We walked in around 1140am. They were supposed to be open at 11am. No tables ready, lights off, and definitely not obviously open. It was though, guess they were just late getting open? Husband ordered the $14 Eggplant under the Vegetarian/Vegan menu. Note, it says vegan on the menu. We asked if the dish could be made vegan, waiter seemed like he wasn’t sure and we asked “non dairy”? They seemed to understand, but still unsure. I ordered the falafel sandwich. We wait, no drinks. Food arrives. No drinks. Eggplant has dairy and it’s a pretty small amount of food for $14. My food comes, I got the falafel appetizer, not the sandwich (which was my bad, should have specified). They were gracious enough to take it back and get me a sandwich.
At this point I thought I should probably let them know my husband specifically asked for “vegan” - no dairy. I hate to do that, especially at ethnic restaurants, but the word vegan is on the menu. A young lady comes over and I politely let her know we asked for vegan and that it had dairy. She looked confused. We had to explain vegan means no dairy. She got upset and explained that English isn’t anyone’s first language there. I kindly told her that vegan is a universal word and I’m just using it because it’s ON THE MENU. They did end up giving us an extra eggplant meal with no dairy for free, but the worker was obviously not sorry. I definitely won’t be going back here. Not vegan friendly at all, as opposed to the menu and not very...
