The food was not disgusting, but I was expecting it to be better than it was. The chips they give are thin crispy and taste good. The salsa however tastes like a mix of marinara sauce and enchilada sauce. Not really what I was hoping for with salsa. I ordered a baja fish taco, my wife ordered a "special burrito." We also got a queso appetizer.
The queso recipe was interesting to us and we're curious how it would taste. It was made with cream cheese, peppers, diced tomatoes and corn. It was tasty, but tasted a lot more like a spinach dip without the spinach than a queso.
The baja fish tacos were a grilled fish with red cabbage lettuce and baja sauce on a tortilla. When mine was brought to the table the tortilla was already torn and falling apart. It required me to try and use both hands to keep it together. But the tortilla was soggy and my attempts were unfruitful. Not sure if it was the taste or just the mush of the taco that really turned me off to it. I did not finish my taco.
My wife's burrito wasn't great either. The enchilada sauce tasted great. But literally everything else about it wasn't her favorite.
The Mexican or spanish rice(forgot what it was supposed to be) that is served with the dish was pretty off putting also. The rice had congealed and had the consistency of day old unrefrigerated mashed potatoes. My guess is that they make the rice in bulk on one or two days of the week and serve each batch over several days, because the rice we were served definitely was not made today.
I was surprised that the refried beans were pretty good though. I'm not usually a big fan of refried beans but theirs was the best thing on our plates.
On the bright side the waitress, I think her name was Brinley, was very friendly and a good waitress.
To summarize, my wife and I really like authentic mexican food, we are also fans of tex mex and even heavily "American-ized" mexican food. This restaurant really wasn't any of those however. We will probably not find ourselves at this restaurant again. Seems to be a good spot for empty nesters though. Not the worst meal, I've had by any means. But it just not great. Total cost of our entrees + appetizer+ drink+...
Read moreWhen we used to live here, El Sol was one of our favorite places so coming to town we decided to go get a late lunch. Big mistake. We were one of only two tables with customers. Our waiter was polite but pushy and we ordered after having only had a couple minutes to see the menu. Then, surprise our meal was out to us within about 5 minutes which isn’t exactly a good sign in a sit down restaurant. The food came out topped with a heaping mound of very black guacamole. After scraping that off my nachos supreme I tried to dig a chip from massive pile of re solidified cheese to find it was so grainy I thought the cheese must have separated. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case the gritty feeling was salt, so much I couldn’t taste anything else. I dug down to the bottom to find it was this way through out. I tried to pick a few bites from the salty mess but it was no use. The bean burrito and rice a member of our group ordered was an unheated, store bought flour tortilla with a smear of something like bean paste that had no flavor and the rice was indescribable. The other item to our table was the tostada chili verde. It too was covered with a mountain of very black guacamole. Once scraped off there was probably 1/2 cup of sauce on a very crispy tortilla. It was lack luster but the half a head of iceberg lettuce seemed fresh. We each took one or two bites before deciding we were better off hungry. Our wait staff walked by 5 or 10 minutes later and asked if we would like go boxes for our nearly full plates, something made me think they are used to seeing people “finished” long before the eat the food on their plates. We did load the mass up in a couple boxes hoping to recomp something of the $50 dollars we had just waisted by giving it to the chickens at home then we stopped...
Read moreThis is one of our go to Mexican restaurants.
We are very particular about our mexican food. A lot of the mexican restaurants put fillers in their burritos like beans and rice. I ordered the dinner special and the burrito came like it's supposed to be, meat and sauce in a tortilla, beans and rice on the side. I had the shredded beef which was one of the options for the special. It also included a cheese enchilada all hot and flavorful. For just over $10
My wife had the nachos with the guacamole and sour cream on the side. For just over $9. The nachos came smothered with all of the good stuff. She chose the ground beef which was one of the options. It came as she ordered and she said it was some of the best nachos she had ever had.
My Aunt had the taco salad for about $11. The first thing she said was this is going to take me a week to eat this. It came in a fried tortilla and the contents flowed out into the plate. She chose the shredded beef on hers. She çouldn't finish it so we brought it home in a box.
The staff was friendly and wearing masks. They were practicing covid-19 protocols.
The one thing I wished they had done was when they sat another family they sat them in the row next to us when there was plenty of room to seat them further away. But what they did was ok, just with my elderly aunt I would have felt better with a little more distance between us because the space was available.
We recommend this place. They are doing takeout if you're not comfortable with sitting in a restaurant. Give them a call or stop in I don't think you will be...
