Tried this place for the first time on a Saturday evening. My boyfriend and I were looking for a patio setting and saw this place pop up on Google Maps. Walked in around 8:30pm. Was not crowded inside nor on the patio. We were seated at a high top on the patio and were the only patrons out there. After being seated, no one came back out for at least 15 minutes to ask if we wanted anything to drink. A server finally came out to take our drink order. I asked to see a drink menu and the server had to run back inside to find it. Was handed a flip book cocktail menu and asked about their beer selection. Server said they don't have a beer menu but I can look on his hand held payment device to see their selection. I could hardly read the list as the server held the device so I just settled for a domestic beer. Boyfriend ordered a sweet tea. The girl who seated us brought out the beer, set it on the table and then walked off without a word spoken. Took at least 10 minutes for my boyfriend to get his tea which was brought out by our server. Overall, it took 30 minutes to get drinks. We were still the only ones on the patio until a nice older couple were seated on the patio. They were also ignored by the staff. It was their first time there as well and the couple told us it would be their last.
As for food, we ordered the Fried Green Tomato appetizer. They had good flavor so we figured the main courses would be good as well. Nope.
Boyfriend ordered the Chicken and Waffles and chose the hot honey syrup. I went with the 5 chicken tenders and fries. The menu stated you can get the tenders "tossed" so I chose to toss them in mild sauce. Food arrived in a timely manner by the girl who seated us and again, she walked off before asking if we needed anything else. Boyfriend tasted the side of hot honey syrup but it wasn't hot honey...it was regular maple. We flagged down our server who said "sorry, we're out of hot honey syrup". Not sure why they didn't mention this upon serving our food...guess they thought we wouldn't notice. Boyfriend was eating the first of three waffles and then stopped. He said the waffles were too sugary as if they infused them with nothing but sugar. This guy will order chicken and waffles anytime it's on a menu so for him to leave behind food is a shocker. As for my 5 chicken tenders, they were not "tossed" in mild sauce...they drizzled sauce on each tender. Need to change the verbiage on the menu to "drizzled". The tenders were dry and heavily battered. I left 2 tenders behind because they hardened as they cooled off. I typically never leave food behind either but it wasn't worth finishing. The large steak fries were decent. Boyfriend didn't like the chicken tenders either that were on his waffles but ate them. No one came back out to check on us nor asked if we needed another drink. I would have ordered another beer or two. We were ready to get out of there but had to wait awhile for someone to come out to request our check. Our check finally came without us having to ask for it...guess they assumed we were done.
The older couple behind us said their fish and other items were over battered...they couldn't finish their food either.
This place could be really cool but the customer service and certain food selections need major improvement. We will...
Read moreMy husband, Tommy and I tried #PhilanthropyGrill for the first time, during the Cinco De Mayo Celebration. We arrived around 6pm and immediately noticed a patio and an additional roped-off piece of property, reserved for outdoor music and games [beanbag toss, etc.] We decided to be seated indoors, to avoid the larger crowd and loud music. The interior was nice-looking and spacious. We were seated in a booth near the rear of the restaurant. Janelle was our server. She was quite lively and personable. We enjoyed her personality. She was sure to let us know that we could take advantage of "Wing Wednesday", a regular weekly deal and the Cinco De Mayo specials. For starters, Tommy and I took advantage of the wing special. We each ordered 5 wings for $2 per order. He had hot, and I had lemon pepper. It did not take more than 5 minutes for the wings to be served. Their wing sauces were decent, but not as plentiful over the wings as we would have liked. The wings were also served were served with sides of ranch and blue cheese dressing that seemed to be made in house (meh!).Tommy did ask for additional wing sauce to pour over his hot wings. The wings were hot and crispy and a good size. However, they didn't seem to be pre-seasoned. The only flavor/taste evident was in the sauce. This didn't bother Tommy as much as it did me. For main entrees, Tommy ordered the chopped steak with garlic mashed potatoes and mac-n-cheese [as a substitute for green beans]. He was underwhelmed, but liked everything accept the out-of-a-box pasta. In fact, we laughed because Janelle had told Tommy she thought it was made from scratch...nawww! 🥴 I ordered fried cod fish with beer-battered onion rings and garlic mashed potatoes. Janelle gave it high recommendation. My potatoes became cold and stiff very quickly. I didn't eat more than a few spoonfuls. The cod was battered and fried perfectly, but it was so very bland, I used all of the tartar sauce available to get it to a likable state. I couldn't finish the onion rings. They had a slightly bitter beer taste that I didn't find pleasant. I didn't complain to staff because it wasn't terrible...just not for me. I found the Spicy Margarita 🍹 good but not at all spicy. The jalapeño was very subtle/mild. I'd give it bonus points for appearance and the spicy candy-coated straw. The true highlight of the evening came when we received our check and were asked to pick a charity of our choice, from the list they provided. They share 2% of their proceeds to charity organizations helping the likes of foster children Veterans, etc. So, in summary, Philanthropy was okay, and they have a cause worth supporting. We'll give them another try in the future and try other dishes. As we were heading out of the door, someone obviously from management stepped over and spoke to us. He mentioned that the menu was being revised and will be expanding in the...
Read moreAlas, what a disappointing experience. 5 of us came to celebrate my sister's birthday. My sister arrived first and was ignored for ten minutes before the rest of us arrived and were ignored for another 20. Finally our waitress showed up, after walking past the neglected table many times, and said she hadn't realized we were her table. Not a great start but I'd have been cool with it if the rest had been good.
Ordered 10 wings for the table, hot. Plus the hummus plate. They were out of the hummus plate and literally everything else on the app menu besides fried mushrooms. The wings, which claimed to be "award winning" were legitimately so terrible that 3 or 4 went uneaten between the 5 of us and my husband and stepson are some big fellas that leave no wing behind. Undercooked, greasy, plenty of vinegar and no spice. I officially award them "Worst Wings of 2022 (So Far)".
Entrées included: 2 Philosophy salads with fried chicken (verdict: "well, the lettuce is good" - chicken was overcooked. 1 chicken and waffles judged by DH to be "okay", but with the same overcooked chicken. Stairway to Heaven burger (I think that's what it was called) was declared good by stepson, who had it with the sweet potato fries. I had the southern burger that came with fried pickles and pimento cheese. It wasn't awful but the sheer volume of gloopy cheese was gross. They did actually cook it med-well though so some kudos for that. The fries were pretty good too but sauces were weird and just not good. You could turn the honey mustard upside down and it wouldn't budge.
Ambience was pretty much "we dgaf". It was 4pm on a Sunday so they were not overly busy but it took a long time to get the check as well... it's a low bar but they did get our order right. Just overall a subpar experience. I hope they make some needed tweaks because some of it was close to...
