I have to compare them to the poke places nearby including the ones outside this city within a half hour drive radius, and this place is just ok for me. I still like the flavors and quality of Jus Poke in Redondo Beach, their garlicky cucumbers are also addicting, the other place I like is King Poke it’s simple, and a good balance of fish and rice / noodles or rice salad or whatever you pick it’s really simple and flavors are simple and you taste the fish more than Jus Poke which marinates the poke in a more salty saucy way… the poke at Honu is all premade like Jus Poke, and looks similar but the flavors are not as good. I don’t know why but it just doesn’t have the right recipe in my opinion, it has way too much sesame oil it is so greasy and I got a cup to go and it leaked all clover it was just too oily! Sesame oil is a very strong oil, you don’t need to drown the fish in it! I haven’t tried anything else but the BBQ ribs do look amazing I would like to try that and review but not sure if I want to pay over $20 for a couple large pieces, when I can go to an all you can eat KBBQ and gorge myself for a little more, (lunch...
Read moreLove this place! Poke is as authentic as you will find outside hawaii. Also everything else we tried (spam musubi, kalbi, Mac salad, rice) were all excellent. And good prices as well. The portions might be little small if you are a big eater but for normal appetites they are perfect. And unlike Jus Poke or almost every other hawaiian restaurant the rice was perfectly cooked. Not mushy and over cooked like everywhere else. Not sure why hawaiian restaurants don't know how to cook rice? Or I'm beginning to think they all think that's the correct way to cook rice? That can't be right because I've been to Hawaii many many times and have never had over cooked rice there. Anyway, you can save a trip to Hawaii if you want a treat. Also the lady at the counter...
Read moreLoved the food here! We ordered the beef ribs, grilled salmon, and a couple of poke dishes. The ribs were fall off the bone tender and SO flavorful; even our young kid liked them instantly. Maybe they smoke the ribs a little too. Whatever this shop does it's "broke da mouth" good. The salmon was delicious. The poke flavors were amazing. We even liked the mac salad and I normally don't enjoy that. Even details down to dressing the rice with dried seaweed was appreciated by us all.
My wife was super happy to be able to sample so many poke flavors as she was ordering. This is our new "go to" Hawaiian place because it's some of the best; even compared to on the islands. Also, the prices are quite reasonable. We can't...
