A bit off the beaten track but very much worth a visit if you’re in the LA or Long Beach Area this is a small museum with a lot to offer. There is lots of parking outside and entry is via a small secure gate where you press a buzzer for the gate to be released. The museum building takes the form of an old railroad depot and has a wealth of artefacts on display. Particularly interesting are the miniature locomotives that used to be manufactured on site. The main exhibits are out side though and include a full size steam engine where you can climb up into the cab, complete with all the right noises as if the locomotive was speeding along. There is also a caboose to explore and see what life was like riding in one of these vehicles. As well as the main site, just across the road are a couple of freight cars and the other side of the park is another caboose to explore. It’s all done really well and packs so much into a small space. The staff were also extremely friendly...
Read moreI really wanted to give this visit 5 stars because it is rich in history and my children really enjoyed as they are into trains. As a parent I appreciated all the artifacts and info posted throughout. Very clean and well maintained. I took a star away because the not so great customer service. Storytime was advertised but not done and I had to inquire why since the explanation was not readily given though I mentioned that I'd plan on it being part of the visit. The two guys were preoccupied doing something with their phones and showed annoyance to guest who "bothered" them with their questions. Was also told I should call before I come to check on Thursdays story time status. Why advertise it then? I think those guys are a poor representation of what is overall a great...
Read moreAs a volunteer at LRM, I can only rate it 5 stars because it’s been one of the best experiences I have had in my life. The rest of the staff is extremely friendly- Alex is a great boss! Also, the educational value from volunteering is wonderful. I didn’t know much about trains beforehand, but the community has taught me so much. Training is thorough: I get to read historical documents, do tours, etc! Being a docent is rewarding, and getting to interact with guests is always enjoyable. Perfect opportunity for students or anyone who wants to expand their historical...
