One morning in early November, I remember waking up craving Chinese food. On my way home, I actually decide on eating at a pizza establishment I've yet to try. I lock up my bicycle, then change my mind about the pizza noticing Chen's Chinese Restaurant across the street. I request a surprise Vegan order and, if I recall correctly (if not, pictures are available to match to the correct menu item), I receive the Kung Pao Bean Curd—which IS very tasty particularly due to the sauces (especially the Brown Sauce of which I ask about which the employee notes as a restaurant secret). YET, after learning from another restaurant about frying Tofu, a couple to a few days later, and doing personal research about the Brown Sauce, I realize the Brown Sauce may not be Vegan (depending on the broth) and may have a little bit of alcohol in it (I don't drink alcoholic beverages, I'm sober by choice); if Tofu is set in a fryer that fries animal products, animal byproducts may enter the Tofu which might indicate contamination hence the reason the other restaurant steams Tofu for individuals seeking Vegan options. All of this information is apparent to me after personal research, and after requesting about Vegan options at another restaurant. My overall experience at Chen's Chinese Restaurant is great. This is all new information for me that I hope may be helpful for the restaurant toward ensuring the comfort of individuals seeking Vegan options. There are Vegan Sauce recipes (for sauces I'm familiar consuming with food from Chinese restaurants).

My friends and I were looking to try some local spots in Long Beach and decided on Chen’s. When we walked in, we were pleased with the old-school charm of the restaurant. The food was great, however, our visit quickly soured when I paid a visit to the men’s restroom. I noticed that the bathrooms were not very clean. The restaurant in general looked a little dirty and worn down. This was expected as it was an old-school restaurant, that was clearly family owned. However, on the floor of the bathroom floor I noticed a dead cockroach. I was alarmed at the sight of this dead roach, as it made me wonder if the restaurant had a roach infestation. I informed the waitress of this and even showed her a picture of the dead roach on the floor. I asked to speak to the manager but either the waitress didn’t understand me due to a language barrier, or simply pretended to ignore my complaint. No resolution came out of that and we promptly left the restaurant disappointed and disgusted. I do not recommend coming here.

The Honey Walnut Chicken is soggy and greasy; I didn't think I'd be one to send back food, but I got the Mongolian Beef instead. Credit to the Beef: it has the taste and texture more like beef liver than actual beef, and that's actually more expensive than beef at restaurants. It's still not something I enjoy, but I'm bringing it home for sad leftovers. The waitress is honestly the most clueless woman I ever got served. Kept asking me exactly what I wanted, but at least confirmed the price with me. For 5 extra dollars, you can get strangely unpleasant steamed rice and decent hot and sour soup with really soggy wontons and an egg roll I left alone. I think the restaurant caters to people who don't know any better. You can get better value at a Panda Express. Edit: Even the obligatory fortune cookie tasted stale and soggy. Edit 2: I have sudden cramps and feel like my stomach is churning. Won't outright say it's food poisoning, but it definitely feels like it. Lowered it to one star.

Have been visiting this restaurant for years.. about 10 years or more. Has always been good. We have our favorite dishes. It's a good family style restaurant. I mean the waiters have kinda always been a lil pushy but the food we can always count on. Unfortunately tonight might have been our last night eating there. We got there about an hr. Before closing. We walked in to find 1 couple eating and it looked like everyone working there was ready to go. The waiter said we are gonna close soon. We were like ok. We sat down he then said. Do you know what you want? I was like yes. Just cause we have our favorite plates. Gave him our order. It literally came in like less then 10 mins. So it's about 30 mins. To closing. Other couple left. We each had eaten a lil bit of everything. We ordered... Egg flower soup..orange chicken..broccoli beef & noodles. I noticed that some of the workers left and I really didn't want to keep them there either. Decided to pay. Well actually they had already brought our bill. So hot up paid $51.00. The waiter said ok thank you.. you have 15 mins. I was like ..ohhh k. Thanks. Walked bk to our table and was about to serve myself a lil more and noticed a freaken dead fly on my plate! 🤮🤮🤢🤢🤢🤢As I showed my husband he got disgusted so did my 2 daughters. The waiter took my plate and then said. Do you want me to wrap the rest for you? I was like ugh! No. I told him I didn't think that was ok. He then said I can charge you 50% of your bill. I said maybe if I was taking the rest home but no.🤮 He then was talking with another worker he wasn't even acknowledging us as we were talking with. I felt like we were doing more of the apology. He just walked away hot my money back that I had already paid, handed it to me and just turned his back to myself & my husband. And my husband there saying sorry we come here all the time we're ot trying to get away with anything. I'm like omg!! They're not even listening to you let's go. So if you ever eat there... check your food before eating it...you wouldn't want any...

20yrs ago, this place was always full. The elder waiters were very nice. The food was delicious and very plentiful! Ever since it was sold some years back, the service and food has not been the same. We no longer live in LB. But when ever we are in town. We always stop here to eat because of happy memories. Well that all changed now. The hospitality is non existent and the place needs a good cleaning. The tables are sticky. A lot of food on the floor. On our last visit, we ordered our favorite dishes. When the food arrived, we were surprised to how much less food is served. The orange chicken looked very different. After a closer look. We were shocked to find out the entire plate was chicken skin. Not one white piece of chicken. We could not pull the meat apart, but had to use a knife and a little force to cut through the skin. We ask to speak to the manager. He was more upset that we brought this to his attention, rather than apologizing about what happened. We did not finish our food. Paid and then left. I mentioned what happened to a friend. He mentioned an article in the Press Telegram a couple years ago. The city closed Chen’s for awhile, due to roach infestation in the kitchen. What used to be our favorite restaurant, is not any more. We will NO...
