The restaurant has a dirty feel. You walk in to be greeted by a dusty, cluttered display.
The staff is unfriendly, and a server at the front table didn’t even look up from counting his tips. It’s not that I’d expect him to stop what he was doing, but a “hello, welcome!” would suffice. A lady appeared from the back and handed me my order. Although she wore a smile, she was curt, kind of a “Here’s your bag. Bye!” No offer of utensils or an upsell, like asking if I would like to order Thai tea. The missed opportunity matched the missed mark that described the food.
I ordered spicy fried rice. It would be more appropriately named spiceless fried rice. No chili peppers, just hunks of green pepper and gluey, overcooked rice. The panang had a 1/2 inch layer of grease sitting on top, as if oil was the only “seasoning” the chef could muster. Plus the chef put mushy, soft tofu in it, and there was nowhere in the app to specify fried tofu, so I took a chance on hope (and good culinary sense) and ended up disappointed. Of course, the staff was rude and refused to fix the issue. But I doubt that switching the tofu would be enough to recover from the dish’s poor quality. Even the Tom Kha soup was flavorless. It’s pretty challenging to mess up Tom Kha because it usually has layers of flavor. This uninspired hot mess was just water and coconut milk with some canned mushrooms plopped in and a few husks of lemongrass.
The last time I ordered from here, over a year ago, the food tasted spoiled because of rancid, reused oil; I had vowed not to order from ASTR again, but I decided to give it another chance since a year had passed. The restaurant could’ve improved, but—no—ASTR is on a downward trajectory, and the employees wouldn’t dare allow things like quality or courteousness to stand in the way of...
Read moreThis is my second visit here over the past 2 years. The first time I ordered pad thai with shrimp, pad see ew with beef, and tom yum with chicken. I was not impressed with the serving size neither the taste. I thought the small portion sizes were because I placed a take out order. Also there were very few shrimp. Maybe 3-4.
On my last visit I sat for dine-in. I ordered cream cheese wontons, dynamite wings, and fried calamari. The appetizers were good. The service was prompt. For entrees I ordered chicken and shrimp pineapple fried rice, a large tom yum with chicken, Mongolian beef, and spicy eggplant with chicken. The rice tasted too strongly of curry but if you love that then order this. There was lots of chicken but only 3 shrimp. The Mongolian beef was delicious! The spicy eggplant was great! Once again the Tom yum was a small portion compared to other restaurants. Overall, the food was okay, the service is good and the food...
Read moreAMAZING This place really IS AMAZING. I can tell you that I just found out about this restaurant and it was instantly one of my top favorites. We tried ordering the same thing after the first visit, couldn't remember exactly what it was - but let me just say that now we just order something different, except the Thai fried rice is a MUST, pretty much any combination of things is going to just blow your mind.
Some of my favorites: *Crying Tiger *Seafood fried rice *Shrimp and scallop in basil Chile *Chicken fried rice *Seafood soup
I'd say 8/10 visits were 5 out of 5 stars. The other two I would give 4½ stars. This place has a great atmosphere. The portions are generous. Always friendly. The food is delicious. When you order seafood, you get A LOT. I mean, the combination seafood has everything but the...
