Vegan health food that is also cheap is unheard of these days. Even if you don't like soul food, this is a place you have to check out at least once. Dining here is an experience of its own.
FOOD
Welcome Bowl ($12 for regular size):
First of all, the portions are extremely generous for the price. We got the regular size instead of the large, and it was still more than enough for a single person. The bowl comes with various carbs and vegetables, and they're seasoned to perfection. Each bite is juicy and explodes with flavor. It does the word soul food justice.
Lentil patty ($11):
So good. The patty is closer to a healthy veggie patty instead of those super processed vegan meats. The mustard sauce inside is super yummy and complements the veggies and patty nicely. The sandwich tastes very "healthy".
SERVICE
You order at a counter. They accept cash and card. You sit down, and they bring your food to a table.
The person at the register was really nice and acted like she truly cared about her customers. She answered all of our questions and guided us when we seemed confused.
The kitchen was a bit slow to bring out the food, but that's usually a good sign that a restaurant is putting care into their cooking, and not cutting corners and taking shortcuts.
FACILITIES/INTERIOR
They have a restroom in the back. Just follow the hallway to the right of the counter. It was clean and everything was stocked properly.
The interior is super casual and homey. I love that they incorporated cultural aspects into the decor. I also thought it was cool that they sold various different products like deodorant, candles, and...
Read moreThis has been one of my favorite places for vegan food. The love of food and community can be felt oozing off every morsel your taste buds delight in! This is a late review as I couldn't find the pictures I took on my last visit. As I don't live in the immediate area at this time I can only enjoy the food when I get a chance. I didn't get to make the grand opening. This was my personal grand opening to Babas' brick and mortar establishment! Well I got the soul plate and met some soul brothers enjoying theirs and shared in some great soul conversations over some soul food. This restaurant has a feeling of home. With a mini library of interesting books. You can take in some knowledge while you wait on your plate. The novelty display with cool finds you can purchase and a wall of art to interpret. A mirror you can check yourself out before and after your meal to ensure your aesthetic is never lacking. See may not be your home but it's your home when you stop by for a welcome plate that's not the only thing that makes you...
Read moreBaba's Vegan Cafe is a historical gem within the Lemert Part District of Los Angeles. A decade or so ago, what started out as a family-owned food cart has emerged into a flourishing full-blown brick and mortar operation. Wose Shabaka, an activist and chef, has been recognized in Vogue and on ABC7 Los Angeles for his dedication to the community and his vegan culinary creations. The exterior is engulfed in vibrant colors, affirming the disenfranchised. Inside, there is an elaborate gift shop with ample seating. Some of the displayed pieces are made by Mama Shabaka and are available for purchase. Kiara is the person in charge of the front of the house. She's accessible, charismatic, and professional. The African diaspora is reflected in the overall interior, which exudes black excellence. The chef's dill and hot sauces are bold in flavor, and the vegan sampler consists of the most-ordered menu items. It's inevitable that Baba's Vegan Cafe will become a global destination for gastromonists craving healthy alternatives in the...
