Ah Chano’s. This is the last of the Original Chano’s... a small Mexican eatery that started up by USC in the late 80’s and, sadly, closed (now known as Huero’s). The original cook opened this shop wother the permission of Chano himself, and it is a time machine back to what the original was.
Family run, the actual location is nothing special, a repurposed fast food spot on the edge of Boyle Heights, across from a nice public park and not too far from USC medical center. But the food... still my favorite Carnitas soft tacos on the planet. The Carne Asada Fries or Nachos are excellent as well. For something filling try one of the burritos (the ‘mixed-up’ burrito is a good place to start). The red salsa is home made and super hot, so drizzle to start and go from there.
If you are driving on the 5, just east of Dodger Stadium and just north of the 10, you are right there. Get off at Mission and try the drive thru. My kids love to hit it on the way to something and eat it in the car (ask for plates). Always friendly, very safe and reasonably priced, Chano’s is an institution in LA, loved by many, you just haven’t heard of yet....
Read moreAbundant and full of flavor G.E. Chano's Drive Thru Mexican Food. Having tried at some point their nachos, which were heaped with toppings and produced a great crunch and taste overall, its cheese fries rich and creamy, it was a fine snack the price worth it. My first visit was sort of a hitch. I asked to add meat to my fries, and there would be an extra charge. I was slightly turned off by that additional charge, but their people did handle the situation very professionally. I passed by a second time in the late afternoon, and it was nearly complete. Drive thru did an excellent job, and my order was ready within a minute. Portions large, food quality exceptional. The only bad thing to say is that the beans on my Carne Asada wrap were kind of watery, so some permanent texture changes ensued. G.E. Chano's had good food with quick service although there were a few minor problems, they were not that important and made for a good quality...
Read moreThe food is good. They have parking. The owner and his older 2 son's are excellent in cooking and especially with their customer service. Unfortunately, the youngest son CRUZ, is very rude and should not be working in a restaurant or around people. He got my order wrong and when I noticed that I had something that didn't look like what I had ordered he got upset, raised his voice and stated that he took the order correctly. On a more recent encounter he was short with my order and he gave a negative attitude as if I was the one who was at fault for leaving an item behind. He forgot to put it in. He had prior issues with other customers in other situations were he makes faces and makes sarcastic remarks. This individual takes away from their overall rating. Wish I could get his schedule so that I never bump into this person again. Will be talking to his father about this since it has...
