I was in Gus's world famous fried Chicken yesterday around 6:00 p.m. I had ordered online via Postmates received a text message that the order was ready. When I arrived there was one person in front of me it was a young man who had obviously never ordered before and was inquisitive about the chicken which is understandable. The cashier, who was a young black girl with a curly weave and she also wore glasses, seemed to be very helpful and I observed as the customer and cashier completed the transaction and his order was placed. However the conversation, which had little to do with the chicken continued and after about 3 minutes I noticed that they were basically socializing. By now I had been waiting about 10 minutes so I waved my phone to indicate that I was picking up in order. I stepped to the counter and gave my name and my tray of chicken was shoved at me and never had I been acknowledged never had I been thanked for the order what I did hear after I was picking up my shoved chicken and was walking towards the door is the cashier apologizing to the previous customer for the interruption. INTERRUPTION!? I WAS INTERRUPTING HER SOCIALIZING WITH THE PREVIOUS CUSTOMER AFTER I HAD BEEN TOTALLY IGNORED AND AFTER MY FOOD HAD BEEN SHOVED AT ME. THIS CASHIER NEEDS TO BE RETRAINED ON PROPER CUSTOMER SERVICE ON PROPER ETIQUETTE AND ON COMMUNICATING RESPECTFULLY. YOU HAVE LOST A CUSTOMER BECAUSE OF THIS PERSON I WILL NOT BE DISRESPECTED BY SOME YOUNG INEXPERIENCED CASHIER'S inconsiderate attitude. Your chicken cost a lot $30 for 10 chicken tenders is a lot you won't be getting my $30 ever again and you owe that all to your young minimum wage earning inexperienced inconsiderate cashier. Good luck with...
Read more20160628 visit. The food did not disappoint! We ordered $50 worth of take out. Two plates (1 half chicken, and 3 pieces), a kids meal 2 tenders, all the sides, plus jalapenos. They call it spicy chicken, but think of it as flavorful. Never had fried chicken this good. The crispy skin was very flavorful with even the breast being moist. It held up surprisingly well all the way home, and our family enjoyed all that was offered to us. We feel the default sides that come with the plate (baked beans and coleslaw) are the two best sides with potato salad closely behind. mac n cheese, fried okra, greens, and fries were good standard fare. They may have tasted better dine-in instead of carry out. Know that baked beans and greens have pork so it is not halal friendly.
The staff is very friendly. Multiple staff interacted and played with my 3-year old, gave him Crayola crayons to color a chicken with. The order taker shared their favorite dishes and let me take my time to order. Once I ordered, she read the order back to me to confirm everything was correct. 15 minutes later, I got my food for carry-out. Everything was correctly placed with sides matched with the correct plate.
Parking is limited, only for carry out, and you can only enter from the Crenshaw northbound side just past Pico. It is one lane and tight, so navigate carefully. If you plan to dine in, Bronson may be a good street to look for public parking. I think they should work with Fumi's Tropical Fish & Pets which is on the other side of Pico and see if it can be used for evening diners. I'm sure some free plates of chicken can...
Read moreGreat fried chicken with a little kick! Louisiana hot sauce at the tables also, and honey too if you like to put some on your chicken (I know I do!) The taste of the chicken deserves 5 stars, but I'm only going to give Gus's 4 because I wasn't very impressed with the baked beans (a bit too sweet, sweet is good but not this much) and the mac & cheese (a bit on the clumpy side, not too creamy). I would have LOVED it if they would have had some corn bread, but nope, just slices of white sandwich bread (rolls would be much better if you're not going to be a fried chicken place that offers corn bread as a side).
Man, warm rolls with butter would have hit the spot. Sandwich bread for this level of good chicken? That's a disservice, frankly.
I have no problem with the plastic silverware they bring you, but Styrofoam plates? We can do better (the chicken comes in pretty hot, I hate to think I'm eating some of that Styrofoam as well!) I know it helps to keep the costs down, but I bet they can do cheap paper plates for about the same cost.
Parking with about 10 spots for take-out only (though I only saw 2 people picking up orders when I left, so not sure what's up there). Recommend park on Crenshaw (no meters), Pico has meters.
You're probably wondered why I didn't give Gus's less stars after reading the above - it's the chicken man, it's THAT good (everything around that chicken isn't all...
