Earth-shattering, mind-blowing, game-changing Cochinita Pibil. The Yucatán is a whole different kind of Mexico - and to experience it in Los Angeles, get over to LFDY!!! Their slow cooked meats in doughy corn tortillas (salbutes!), their decadent pastries (stuffed w sweet potato & coconut, guava paste, or the cream cheese&jalapeño puffs), and everyyyything in between. They’ve even got chaya - the Mayan spinach superfood that makes for a great smoothie. I stumbled upon these guys while getting my car worked on down the street at Pep Boys, and then I was back two days later for more. Cochinita Pibil, if you don’t know, is super slow-cooked pork (traditionally cooked underground) that has this rich red sauce w a kick of sweetness- almost like a pho broth that’s been cooked down, maybe bc they both use cinnamon? Whatever, it’s not science— it’s MAGIC. You’ve got to taste it...
Read moreA trip to a nearby auto upholstery shop left me wandering around Pico-Union for a few hours with a sleepy baby in a stoller. Was very lucky to find this place. It's a really nice, completely family run bakery. I love their baked goods--they even recommended a guava filled pastry that didn't have any dairy for my allergic toddler. What really shines is their Cochinita Pibil, Lomitas (only on Thurs/Fri) and their tamales. The cochinita pibil is a pork stew that is great in sandwiches(tortas), on tacos, or do like me--I buy it by the pound and eat it for a week over rice. They serve it with pickled onions that provides a nice sour counter punch to the stew's umami goodness. Go there more then once and they'll be greeting you by name. I hope this place continues to do great, and someday graduates to...
Read moreTheir Cochinita plebil is SOOO wrong! They are just dry carnitas in plebil sauce! Even Carnitas souls be juicier than that!!! How can you claim to be a YUCATÁNIAN bakery? How can you call yourself a name where cochinita plebil comes from & serve regular old DRY carnitas?! that’s like going to Maine or New England & getting imitation crab! The guava puff pastries are also bad! The guava is not real & the cream isn’t either! If I wanted a fake pastry I would of bought it for less at a Mexican grocery store! Top it off the beans tasted like they were mixed with can beans to pass off as homemade. I have NO idea how this place has good reviews… I guess if you were used to getting dry pork you wouldn’t know the way this dish is supposed to...
