Nestled in the bustle of Ventura Blvd, you’ll find Shin Sushi recently received a Michelin 2019 one star and has been open for about a year. Sushi Chef Take brings his 20 plus years of sushi expertise and family sushi business heritage to provide us with his purist view of how sushi should be. You won’t find mayo or rolls here, but you will find pure sushi umami. He has it down to the consistency of temperature in his fresh handpicked fish, the perfect balance sushi rice, miso soup actually having the broth impregnated with the flavor of the amaebi, crafted anago, and the usage of his house miso in his amaebi. You’ll have to go to realize the difference in his details as my photos or words cannot explain. I liked the pace of delivery, the chill atmosphere and the ability to watch Take-san create his art (there are no obstructions between you and his work area). The evening of omakase starts with a dish of seasoned appetizers immediately followed with a plethora of seasonal and imported fish and closed out with some homemade ice cream. You will leave delighted and your wallet won’t feel a burning hole. Shin Sushi is most definitely a hidden gem and we’re very happy to have had the opportunity to beat the crowd before others start to find out about it. A must-try if you’re a sushi connoisseur. Notes: -Highly recommended to make reservations and to properly cancel if you can’t show (to ensure others can dine if you choose to cancel). The place is about quality and not the volume of customers. It was discerning for a party of 4 not to show after us and has a bigger impact on small business owners. -The restaurant is to the left rear of the lot and parking...
Read moreDisclaimer: My visit to this restaurant took place over a year ago. I felt compelled to write this review after my recent visit to Japan and the experience I had with its incredible cuisine.
After seeing Shin Sushi in the Michelin guide, I decided to book a reservation (required) for my birthday last year. The experience was quite a memorable one. The décor and general vibe of the restaurant certainly doesn't scream Michelin star, but the food more than makes up for this.
The meal is Omakase style and started with an assortment of seasonal Japanese vegetables and small bites, each one unique and delicious. Then the sushi began and unsurprisingly was the star of the show. The chef took great care with each and every piece, expertly forming the sushi, explaining where the fish came from and what it meant to him personally. Every bite was bliss, washed down with what is the best miso soup (or any soup for that matter) I've ever had - truly exceptional depth and balance of flavors. There was no dish that left me even slightly disappointed and dessert is highly recommended.
It was extremely apparent that the chef wanted to provide the best culinary experience he could to each guest at his 8-seat sushi bar. On top of that, he was very friendly and a joy to converse with/learn more about.
I felt compelled to write this review after my recent visit to Japan, where it was my mission to find excellent sushi almost everyday. I have to say that nothing we tried in Japan was equivalent to the meal we had at Shin Sushi (how lucky Angelenos are to have such incredible cuisine from so many different cultures).

Read moreAbsolutely amazing Omakase. I can’t say enough good things about this place. Everything was so incredibly fresh, well thought of. The fish was absolutely delicious so many different textures and flavors used by the chef. The different marinations he uses for the fish and also using charcoal smoke or searing to add another layer of depth to the already stunning fish.
They have an excellent Sake selection our server recommended very delicious sake to us.
Make a reservation. Get there early! Do not be late! This is an experience just as much as it is about the food. You can tell the chef really cares about the way he prepares everything. When we came in he had our plates ready set for exactly how many were coming. It was a very intimate special experience.
I haven’t been to Japan but this felt like I was there and experiencing something very special.
