Worst sushi experience I have ever had.
We came to Jay's because of good reviews, but from seeing the atmosphere and the customers, it's clear the best reviews are from friends of his, not real customers experiencing his restaurant blind. That experience, in particular, is so abysmal that I would never recommend this place to anyone.
The service was the first thing that stuck out, we had ordered 4 nigiri rolls, FOUR rolls. Four sushi rolls that took 45 MINUTRS to prepare, with us and one other guest, that is horrible speed. The waitress didn't understand anything that we had ordered, and by the end of it all we had only ended up eating 3 or 4 rolls total, but they had the audacity to charge us the AYCE price, even though I clearly could have eaten more, but at the speed rolls were being served, I would have been there for 4 hours.
Jay is terribly rude to his guests ( note that he was particularly friendly and even drank with his more recurring guests) but me and my fiance as newcomers to his restaurant were treated with so much disrespect, he insulted us when we requested to know when we would be receiving our food, completely ignoring us when his"friends" arrived and would make them rolls instantly, within minutes in fact.
You would think with all that prep time the sushi would be incredible; rather, it was bland and tasteless. Sesame seeds sushi, incredibly uninspired flavors. It tasted as if he picked the cheapest fish from the local market, cut them up and threw them on some rice without the proper preparation.
All in the end, they overcharge for horrible service, bland tasteless food, and terrible manners. I hope the owner Jay reads this, thanks for being my choice for me and my fiances first night engaged, you REALLY set the bar...
Read moreThis is a review for "Studio Sushi" not "Sushi J's" It seems the reviews are getting mixed a bit.
Short Version: Amazing food, good portions and the staff is super friendly and knowledgeable.
Sushi: Tried the Angeleno roll which was superb! Generally rolls with spicy tuna are a bit overpowering but the addition of the unagi tempura balances it out quite well.
Also had an Amberjack hand roll and Fresh water eel sushi which were both delightful. I went with the chef's recommendation on the hand roll and it was exquisite, probably my new favorite fish! Fresh water eel was well cooked, not tough or rubbery like other places tend to lean towards.
Overall, the quality of the fish was really high and they were more than happy to answer any questions about the menu.
Drinks: They have Orion which if you have not had I would highly recommend! They also had a few beers on tap, will update once I go back :)
Yuzu Tea! had not had this before and it blew my mind!
Ramune Soda! have not had this in years and was happy to grab one to go.
Interior: Nice interior with a huge sushi bar and a nice view out towards the studio.
Exterior: Low key on the outside but very welcoming and now more visible after they cleaned up the plants that were obscuring the restaurant a bit previously.
Also, free parking! in their own attached lot so super easy to drop by.
Will definitely be coming back and currently my new favorite of the many sushi spots...
Read moreThis is for Studio Sushi. I've been eating here for 15 years when it was owned by Jay. We live right next door to this location and it is very convenient. Tonight we decided to go in and give the new place a try.
Easy and free parking out back, is always nice.
Lot's of new items in the menu and different rolls. I had my usual salmon, eel, but I noticed some new fish, like the black snapper which was fantastic! They add a light citrus sauce that really drives home the flavor. The salmon was perfect with beautiful white sirations, it was sweet and buttery. The menu has a really good and diverse selection, a nice addition which wasn't included before. Creative and tasty rolls as well.
The chefs, despite being young are really good and friendly. The owners are present and very engaging and friendly. The wait staff are nice, professional and attentive. I've eaten at all the places on " Sushi Row" and this place shouldn't have a problem competing. In fact their prices are better with the same quality - imho.
I'm happy to find my favorite local sushi spot is...
