As a small business owner, I look for certain things in employees, and chief among them are 1. Do they actually care or are they just here to collect a paycheck? And 2. Do they actually improve the overall product we're selling?
I mention this because this is the lens through which I, a manager, see the world, and it's why Terrell stands out at Sweet Rose Creamery.
Let's talk about point #2 first. Sweet Rose is, ostensibly, a business that sells ice cream. It's good ice cream. Great, even. But it's in a crowded space. Sweet Rose is able to stand out in a few ways: 1. It's got a great location — it's pleasant, it's near a bunch of people with disposable income, and it's close to other businesses that might bring others to Brendwood Country Mart in the first place. Aside from that, the store is cute inside, the brand's social media account is decent, and there's an emphasis on high-quality ingredients.
Still, I think it's safe to say that Sweet Rose knows that the key to success involves serving much more than just a frozen delicacy in a cone (or cup): Sweet Rose has to serve joy. And a key ingredient to that product — one arguably as important as the ice cream itself — is service.
And that's where Terrell stands point. He greets my partner and me with a huge smile (sometimes a dap), he talks about the latest movies he's watched (often with HOT TAKES), he asks us about our lives, and he brings us a genuine joy that a delicious scoop of ice cream never could. My partner and I bought a Sweet Rose membership, and we use it quite often, but we literally time our trips to nights we know Terrell is working.
We're paying for joy, and it's the coupling of people like Terrell and delicious, high-quality ice cream that make Sweet Rose a 1 of 1 establishment. It's a complex world out there, with sadness and grief coming at us from every direction, especially via the internet/social media. To be able to find 20 minutes of true joy each night thanks to a great man and a scoop of ice cream is something people gladly pay for. Thank you, Terrell!
Now to point #1, finally: Terrell actually gives a [bleep] about his job. He talks to me about the business — ideas he has, things he'd like to implement, things he's noticed among customers. In my eyes as a manager, he seems like a dream employee — one who actually wants to see the business thrive.
What's more, he's just got great skills; I recall visiting Sweet Rose one night shortly after some kind of promotion, and the line was out the door. Terrell was, for some reason, solo that night, but he remained cool as a cucumber while grinding it out to get everyone the ice cream — and the service — they were there for. What's more, Terrell always offers great ideas for ice cream pairings. Sometimes, he just asks "Do you want to trust me on something?" And after I reply with an affirmative, he serves up an absolute BOMB combination of flavors.
Terrell's skillset is incredibly rare, and it's his hard work, passion/interest in his job, and especially his kindness/joy/excellent social skills that combine to create a truly unique experience every time my partner and I walk through those doors.
5/5 stars. Thank you, Sweet Rose! Thank...
Read morea lil about me: I love food with unique names or flavors I could eat a large carton of ice cream in a day or two (that's how much I love it)
Reason this is my #1 ice cream place: quirky original flavors that are surprisingly tasty! ie. avocado, figs, sweet corn, basil they use organic ingredients (which is why they're a lil pricey) rich and creamy they always come up with new unique/seasonal flavors the store is well branded (I am a design nerd) located in a quiet location
First time I came here, it was for their bacon sundae. Around that time not many shops served bacon sundae so I was really stoked when I found Sweet Rose Creamery thanks to yelp. I was more giddy when I found out that they serve funky ice cream flavors :)
I wasn't too impressed with the sundae. Taste of rich creamy vanilla followed by a chewy piece of bacon...no.
My favorite ice cream: Banana!!! and Carrot ;) I brought my dad here and he loved the coffee ice cream so much, he couldn't stop raving about it to my coffee-loving mother.
Would love to come back and try their seasonal pumpkin icecream.
Sampling is limited which is a bummer because I want to try them all! There's a lot of parking. There's always a line but it's not...
Read moreI don’t really write Yelp reviews but I felt compelled to say something from this mind blowing experience. Honestly this is the only ice cream shop I actually drive to. Others I’ve just had postmates deliver a pint cause of the hassle. I keep coming back to this location for 2 reasons. 1) My guy Terrell. Everytime I come in he comes up with a delicious ice cream cocktail unlike anything I’ve ever tasted. You want a sundae? You’ll get a sundae but it’s gonna rock your world and you won’t even understand why. He kind of brings back an element of the cold stone out where you could build your own ice cream. B ut rather than gamble with ingredients, Terrell has this sixth sense of knowing how to make it all come together nicely. 2) the ice cream. It’s the best quality ice cream I think. All the ingredients are organic and real. Nothing synthetic about it. I highly recommend paying a visit to Sweet Rose and ask...
