Tried them 3 or 4 times, disappointed each time. We wont be returning.
I want to give them 1 star considering how many times Ive tried to give them a shot, but i feel thats unfair to the wait staff and employees. I will say that the staff is very friendly and the food is pretty good, not outstanding, but good. My issue is with the ammount of money they charge for what would be a kids menu portion at other restaurants. The previous time I went there I ordered a shrimp poboy ($13 for the "large" poboy) and literally had 11 shrimp on it (and they are medium sized shrimp at best), I counted bc it was the most anorexic poboy Ive ever seen. So figure $2 for the fries, thats about $1 per shrimp. Smh. This time I took my daughter, she got the cstfish basket ($14, and the waitress said she could have extra fries since she doesnt like cole-slaw) and I got the catfish and shrimp basket ($17).. Her $14 catfish basket had 4 skinny fish fillets, and no more fries than mine did even though she didnt get the cole-slaw (the fries for cole-slaw substitution was the wiatress's suggestion, not ours). My $17 catfish/shrimp combo basket had 3 baby catfish fillets, 7 shrimp, and a handful of fries. Like I said, the food itself aasnt outstanding, but it was good (6 out of 10 bc my shrimp were WAY overcooked and like chewing on rubber) BUT the biggest turnoff was spending $40 on 7 catfish fillets and 7 shrimp. Bottom line, if youre desperate for a seafood fix and through some weird set of circumstances theyre the only place open and you dont mind paying grown up prices for little kid portions, then this is your place. Otherwise theres plenty of other options in the area that overflow your plate for equal or better prices (like Charlies in Springfield or BandJ's Seafood...
Read more"There is now way I am eating here. This place is in a strip mall and those types of places always suck!" That was my reaction when we first pulled up to this place!! MAN OH MAN... I am glad I went in and gave them a try! I will tell you this, a po-boy is not a po-boy unless you use the right type of bread. That is why places like Domelise's and Parkway Bakery are top 2 po-boy shops in NOLA! They use the right bread. Not thick, not too thin, has a little crisp in the crust and the inside has a little softness to it. And Chookies has that same type of bread! When I bite into that shrimp po-boy for the first time, my eyes closed shut, my mouth went into a huge smile, and I did a little dance in my seat, I was so happy I found a true po-boy in Hammond, LA!!! The seafood is fried just right with the right amount of seasoning and it come out hot and fresh. Appetizers where great, kids loved their food, and the menu has just enough to keep you coming back for more but not too much that you can't decide what to eat!! Added bonus, you can order for pick-up before arriving, and pull up to their to-go window! Fast and easy way to do it!! The only thing I did not like about this spot is the space on the inside. Wish it would have been a little bigger and the chairs a tad more comfortable. I know these are petty items to nick-pick, but I am honest with everything I review. I do not leave anything out nor do I exaggerate with my experiences! If this place was a stand-alone restaurant and had more comfortable seats, they would be getting 5 stars from me every time!! With that said, I give this spot 4.6 out...
Read moreI've been eating at Chookie's for over 12 yrs & I have always LOVED their food!! While dining in, their food is usually perfectly seasoned & delicious. ♨️ However, I recently began ordering ahead to pick up our food & eat at home- abt once or twice a month. Unfortunately though, the last 5-6 times I have picked up our dinner there, we were extremely disappointed! 😕
We usually order the Pistolette Trio, a Seafood Stuffed Potato & an "All 3" 🍤 (Seafood platter with French Fries) or something similar- each meal costing at least $40-50. In this price range, one could resonably expect to receive condiments (ketchup, cocktail or tarter sauce, lemon perhaps...) with their meal but NONE were included. After a couple such visits, I began specifically requesting sauces but still did not receive them on the next several trips. And.... although I only live 5 mins away, by the time I reach home everything was already cold. ❄ Hopefully management will take notice before this impacts their business too much. 🤞 Their food is usually so VERY good & it would be such a shame to see Hammond...
