So I normally get the chocolate cake, which is very good. Today I wanted something citrusy. They were out of a lot of items, including the lemon meringue pie that I wanted, because yesterday was Pi Day, which was somewhat understandable. I asked for key lime pie instead, and after trying for a solid five minutes, the poor kid trying to serve me presented a piece of pie with zero, and I mean zero filling. I said no thanks and left.
This seemed strange and I thought maybe it was a one-off. But reading the reviews here, it seems like there might be a pattern of producing pies with very little filling - especially meringue pies, which you can't examine until they're actually cut.
I then drove 2 minutes down the street to Plehn's Bakery and picked up an entire lemon meringue pie - with plenty of delicious lemon filling - for a mere $13, less than half the cost of a whole pie from Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen.
To be clear, I'm not mad at the young staff member who cut the key lime pie. I'm concerned that this place might have a pattern of trying to rip people off, at least with their meringue pies.
I do still recommend the chocolate...
Read moreI was very disappointed in my first (and probably last) experience at The Pie Kitchen. I ordered the Red Raspberry Fudge ice cream which was basically just vanilla with disgusting syrup mixed in. I passed it around to my friends, and we all agreed it was completely inedible. I also tried the Coconut Cream Pie (pictured) and was, once again, disappointed. The cream filling was gritty/coagulated- not smoothe like I expected. The meringue, while beautiful, tasted of extra sugary marshmallow. Perhaps I have been spoiled with exceptional pies my entire life and expected too much? Regardless, I see no reason to go back when I could get Graeters or UDF or even ColdStone and know I'm getting quality.
For the record, one of my friends got the Cherry pie (pictured) and another, the Oreo ice cream and both were pleased. I was not impressed by the peanut butter ice cream (pictured) but didn't hate it either. I hate leaving a negative review, but I do not understand the hype...
Read moreDelicious. Their stuff tastes like a better version of homemade. Not artificial, not mass produced, it's the real deal.
When I go to a place like this, I don't want a piece of cheesecake that tastes like it came from a "factory" that churns out thousands of pieces a day. Don't get me wrong, that cheesecake has it's place. But from a place like this, I want a piece that tastes like something that I made at home, only much, much better. That's exactly what I found here.
We tried the cheesecake, pie, a brownie, and some ice cream. All of it was delicious. They all taste authentically homemade and fresh, which I loved. We're not local, but if we're back in town I would love to try a few of their other offerings, too.
It was a little busy when we went in (around 8:00 pm on a Saturday), but the line moved quickly. The staff was also very friendly, willing to help, and offered suggestions for first timers. Overall it was a great experience, I would...
