Ok, here's the scoop on the new location on Bardstown Rd. I went there Wednesday evening (7:20 p.m.) July 2, 2025. I know LJS very well, I've been a customer since 1969 when I was a kid & I was a manager from 1979-1981. My wife & I met there in 1979 so we know the food.
The food at Bardstown Rd was good but not great. They have changed the batter, it's still crispy but it desperately needs seasoning, the fish & chicken are very bland. The fish was fresh, crispy & hot but the chicken was obviously way past it's holding time which surprised me because they were extremely busy so most likely they were making batches ahead to keep the line moving but the chicken wasn't selling as fast as they thought or we got the bottom of the pile, it was soggy & chewy. The hushpuppies were awesome! They are the LJS authentic hushpuppies, the coleslaw is good but they changed it, it used to be cut very fine, now it's a rough cut slaw & the dressing is good but it tastes different from what I remember LJS slaw tasting like. They now serve whole kernel corn instead of corn on the cob which I can understand because it's really hard to keep corn on the cob fresh because it takes a while to cook so you have to cook it ahead for fast service but keeping it in hot water over cooks it so the whole kernel approach makes sense, it was good, maybe add some butter & salt & it will be perfect. The fries are a big disappointment, they switched to waffle fries, my favorite was the shoestring fries from years ago, they were thin like the ones at Steak & Shake, they switched to fatter fries in the mid 80's in an effort to get a longer holding time but that was never a success, the waffle fries are a personal preference thing, I'm not a fan but a lot of people like them, obviously they're a success at Chick-fil-A. It took quite a while to get my order taken, the line was out onto Bardstown Rd & it took 35 minutes to get to the menu board but it seemed they had some big orders, once I placed my order it didn't take long at all to get my food. The young man (Kenneth) that took my order was very professional, courteous & helpful. He spoke very clearly which is uncommon at drive thru's & the young lady who served me at the window was very pleasant, professional & helpful.
No doubt they will work the bugs out as the crew works together for a while. I hope they change the batter or the seasoning, there's an expectation when you go to LJS & they need to maintain that standard. There are some healthy options on the new menu, that's exciting & we will check some of that out on future visits.
I know this is a long review but I wanted to give you a real review. Hope...
Read moreWell I thought I would stop at the new Long John silver's today on my way home and the joke was on me. First off there's kids in there working and it is by no means their fault because the two adults in there should have been working harder. The red-headed lady that was in the back had her phone attached to her head half of the time while there was four or five people in the drive-thru and at least 10 of us waiting on food inside. Additionally my fish was cooked apparently in the same grease as shrimp as I'm pretty sure that you're not supposed to do that because I an allergic reaction as soon as I got done eating my food because I am allergic to shrimp. Additionally the food was horrible The fish was flat and fried so bad I could not even eat it My hush puppies were dripping and grease and the waffle fries were about the only thing that was of any solace. Whoever owns this needs to be there or have a better management system or teach these people how you cook the food deliver the food put food in orders like they literally were just standing there looking at a screen like they had no idea how to put orders in a box. Additionally the lady on the phone also burnt something in the microwave because they weren't paying attention and there was smoke everywhere. Needless to say I shall not be stopping back at Long John silver's in Fern Creek again. Because I don't want another dose...
Read moreSomething rare a new stand alone LJS. I missed our local LJS when it closed ~15 years ago. Like many I took my business to other chains. I am very happy to see and experience this new store.
My experience on my first visit was good over all. The food was fresh and service was excellent. There was some confusion with my modified order and the new staff seemed less familiar with LJS's substitutions than I, a long term customer.
As I sat enjoying my dinner I spoke with another long time LJS customer picking up a order for his family; he was carefully checking his large order, mentioning that 3 out of 7 orders he had gotten since they opened at this location had small errors, but over all he was very pleased. Both of us had our concerns address by the cook as the manager on duty was absent, hidden in the office.
Any new restaurant has issues on opening. I was satisfied as was the other customer I spoke with. My fish was abit chewy rather than flaky likely slightly over done. The hushpuppies were three times LJS's normal size, likely using wrong sized scoop.
The building is new. The dining room and service area is clean and shiny. Unfortunately the restroom stunk of bad plumbing or poor ventilation; this needs to be addresses as it is not normal in a new building.
I will eat here again and I expect the kinks i experienced will disappear as the staff...
