Ordering from this place is always a little bizarre. Food is sometimes good, sometimes bad, which is not really an inconsistency that I'd want at a restaurant.
I ordered a wonton soup and sesame chicken for dinner. The wonton soup was solid, I personally really like their wonton soup. It was the sesame chicken that was weird.
I'm not an expert on cooking, but in the past, whenever I ordered sesame chicken, I could expect fried chicken in a sweet-ish savory sauce with a decent coating of sesame seeds on top.
What I got looks like they rolled the chicken in sesame seeds, then fried it, then coated it with sauce. The result is an insane amount of sesame on each bite of chicken. I can only describe the texture of biting and chewing a piece of this chicken as "uncomfortable".
The little sesame seeds would pop in your mouth, and there were so many of them. They weren't crispy at all, because the sauce is on TOP of the seeds, rather than underneath. Visually, it looks like thousands of wet insect eggs on chicken. Texture-wise, I kinda felt like I was chewing thousands of wet insect eggs. Basically, it was wet tiny seeds popping in your mouth, then chicken texture. I've read other reviews where people say they liked the sesame chicken, and I have to wonder if they got the same sesame chicken experience that I did.
Other times I have ordered from this place have been mixed as well. The meat dumplings are good, but I find the pork fried rice and pork lo mein really lacking in meat. Ordering General Tso's seems to be the best safe, though boring, option.
Overall, I can't really say I recommend Sang Kee Asian Bistro. The consistency of quality is...
Read moreI have patronized Sangkee in Wynwood for 9 years now. I would tell my family and friends and my co-workers about the excellent food and the quality of their meats! However I, my closest friend had asked me if I wanted Sangkee food. Of course I couldn’t turn it down. So I told her to get me Mei fun in black pepper sauce with chicken and extra sauce. Well needless to say how disappointed I was when my friend brought me the Mei Fun black pepper sauce with Chicken. It was only very thin strips of chicken that was smaller than my baby pinky finger and some was not as long and to top that off only 5 to 6 pieces. For their high prices as it is, I found this to be appalling! So my friend called the lady at Sangkee and explained this to her. Ok, so now my friend had to go out of her way to pick it up the next day because we are a bit far from Sangkee. When my friend brought another Mei Fun black pepper sauce with chicken it was way worse than the first one. No extra sauce the noodles was so dry and stacked together and had a different time pulling apart to try and look for the chicken. It must have been like 3 small pieces. I was so angry and humiliated at this point! If I wanted all noodles I have all different kind of Asian noodles in my house to cook. So I will not be returning to this restaurant. I believe they are trying to cut cost and take advantage of their regular customers that’s been supporting their business. You might want to check your food before you leave especially if you live far! Here are...
Read moreThe entrance leaves something to be desired, but the staff are amiable and ambiance is calming. The booth and chair was comfortable. Tastes can be subjective, but our expectations of what egg rolls, chicken lettuce wraps, and lemongrass beef were not what we are accustomed to. The reviews were plenty and quite positive, but this was not our experience.
Surprisingly, the lettuce wrap was not individual layers of lettuce with which to pull apart and wrap the meat. It was a half head of lettuce NOT pulled apart, like a salad wedge with exposed core, and lettuce was paper flimsy. We asked for a replacement head but it too was a half head of lettuce cut, similar to a salad wedge. The chicken was not a ground beef consistency in a brown hoisin sauce, but rather a mix of chopped water chestnuts and chicken strips. The lemongrass beef was gristly, not smoky, and tasted somewhat flat. The chicken spring roll appeared to have a standard filler. Unfortunately, the duck and hoisin sauces lacked punch and flavor.
We don’t want to be too critical as the food was quite hot and brought quickly. The staff was unobtrusive, attentive and friendly. We have made a habit of trying new Thai and Asian cuisine weekly, but the tastes...
