Me and my coworkers go here maybe twice a year to enjoy good food at a decent price. You can tell this place is trying to imitate Portillo's in decor and the food they serve, but it's just missing that umph that makes Portillo's so much better! I wish they had better seating too, it gets cramped real fast and the seats feel super cheap. The parking lot is in the same shape, it's very small and crowded.
Don't try the monster dog they have...it's just too much and its not even a frank or Vienna beef!!! Not to mention the only time I had it they burned a lot of it so imagine eating a 2 foot long dry, overcooked hot dog with crap loads of mustard and relish...yeah...it becomes torture after awhile.
Everything else is pretty standard fare aside from the tuna salad which is the usual bland mess you find at places nowadays (what happened to good old country tuna salad with boiled eggs, relish, paprika, sugar, mustard, etc??!?!?!) The wait here is also inconsistent. Sometimes they have your food out in minutes then the next time you come you'll order something similar and it'll be 20 minutes before you're chowing down. They've been actively taking steps to cut down on the wait so I can't really knock them on it.
Overall I'll keep popping in here every once in awhile, but it won't be making my top 10 list anytime soon.
3/5 stars
*Tip: Maybe its just me as well, but this place is a dead zone for AT&T customers. I can't get service here and there came a point where an urgent matter came in at work and I didn't respond because I didn't realize I wasn't getting any messages. So if you're eating here during your break, you've been...
Read moreI literally live in "beef land." I'm surrounded by top-notch beef restaurants like Novi's, Mr. Beef, Mr. Submarine, Buona Beef and so many others, It would take me an hour to list them all. And believe me, they all have their merits to go along with their tasty food, but when I want a great beef sandwich, I go way out of my way and visit Pop's in Lyons. They simply have the best beef and Italian sausage in my area. Perhaps it's the freshness of the beef or something about the way they prepare it that makes their beef sandwiches stand out from all the rest. They also have a whole slew of fantastic soups, too. Their in-store and drive up menus are very helpful, with plenty of photos. Otherwise, I wouldn't know the difference between hot peppers (giardiniera), sweet peppers and mild peppers (yet another different type of giardiniera). They'll prepare your food the way you like it. I like my beef sandwiches with mild peppers, red sauce and shredded mozzarella cheese—and they've never gotten any of my orders wrong at the drive thru or at the counter. Years ago, I told my neighbor about Pop's and how much I loved the food there. He said, "Oh, c'mon" in disbelief (probably because he, too, lives in "beef land"). So I brought back a beef sandwich for him to try out. After that day and ever since, he agrees with me! Pop's...
Read moreHad a bad experience with 1 of the employees, I made a mistake and thought I gave the employee a $20 bill, but it was actually a $5 and $1 bill for my total which was like $5 and change, the mistake on my part was that I was counting the remaining cash that I possessed, when I went to apologize he was very rude and disrespectful as if I was trying to run a money scam on them, which was not the case at all, I was so hurt by the fact he wouldn't except my apologies and walked away from me, I've been a customer of Pop's for over 10 years and never in my life have I ever felt so humiliated, this was the Lyons location on Ogden, I'm almost embarrassed to even step foot in this particular location EVER again because of the way I was frowned upon, also the fact that the cashier that rang my order didn't have money in her register, which I found very odd, this led to the other employee, (a guy) to go and retrieve my change from another register. I hope this matter can be addressed and I'm not just typing this long feedback message, also I want to add that the next person in line was treated like royalty, and that made me feel like I was beneath this earth, I hold nothing against Pop's, but unfortunately I will No Longer make any purchases from the Lyons location 😢. Thanks...
