We recently enjoyed a delightful dinner at Oishi Sushi & Bar in Madison. Clearly, a very solid 4 out of 5 stars overall. Our standout experience was undoubtedly thanks to Michelle, our server, who deserves a full 5 stars for her vibrant energy and invaluable assistance in navigating the extensive menu.

Starting with a classic appetizer of edamame, we ventured through an array of tantalizing rolls and sushi, culminating in decadent desserts like tempura ice cream and green tea mochi. all the while, Michelle guided us through the offerings with expertise, enhancing our dining journey.

Our meal began with appetizers including shumai, crab Rangoon, and Takoyaki, setting the stage for the gastronomic adventure ahead. The parade of dishes included multiple orders of nigiri, and other featured highlights such as the paradise roll, the sea monster roll, and the tantalizingly named sex on the beach roll – each one a savory delight. I never found the beach, nor did I find the sex - but the roll was terrific!

Complementing our sushi feast were additional treats like miso soup, tuna tataki, and perfectly crispy fried calamari, each contributing to the richness of our culinary experience.

While our bill exceeded $200 for three adults, it was a fair reflection of the quality and quantity of food enjoyed, further enriched by several rounds of exceptional cocktails.

Oishi Sushi & Bar left such a favorable impression that we eagerly anticipate returning and enthusiastically recommend it to fellow diners in the...

Terrible service!!! There is one person that works the front and serves as the hostess, waitress, and bus boy. She is not friendly, nor does she check up on you. At one point, I asked for a couple of forks and plates, and she pointed to them and told me to get my own. The food was ok. We got 3 bento box lunches and a combo tempura. My kids liked the shrimp and salmon teriyaki bento boxes, but my steak teriyaki came out raw. You get a small piece of beef that comes sliced. I told her that I'd like my steak a little more done, and it came back very chewy - not to mention the server sneezed as she walked away with my plate. Upon return, she said she put it back on the grill and cooked each side, but it was evident that the steak had been nuked, as it came back in less than 2 minutes and with a ton of sauce doused on it. The sauce tasted good. The steak did not. There were only 2 other tables in the restaurant during our visit, and both had already been served food. There was no reason we should have had bad service or bad food. My kids kept asking why there were only 2 tables there at 12:30pm. Now, I know why. We did not even get a "good-bye" or "thank you" as we left. The server was busy watching a movie on her phone, while sitting at the front desk, which is right next to the door. Needless to say, we will not...

Decided to grab a quick lunch here one day and was horribly disappointed. As I entered a host was on the phone but never once acknowledged my presence. I stood there for 5 minutes until he just walked away. A younger server walked up to grab something and I had to get his attention for him to even notice me. By this time, another group came in for lunch - a couple - who were also blatantly ignored. Finally, I'm able to place my order, a sushi roll, and am told it'll be done in 5 minutes which seems FAR too short a time to prepare. I told the younger host I'll be waiting at a table in the back and to let me know when my food is done. I waited for 15 minutes. The couple left, didn't hear what they said exactly but they were terribly annoyed. At this point I asked when my order would be ready and was told it had been for 10 minutes and was just sitting on a counter in a bag. At this point I'm so frustrated I ignore the fact they left FISH out without telling me, paid far too much for my roll, took it home, and bit into the coldest, frostiest piece of sushi I've ever eaten. Worse than any grocery-bought roll I've ever purchased. I will never return and advise every potential patron to stay...

I passed by this restaurant many times for few years (before it was changed to Oishi) and I’m so glad I came here tonight. I was craving for good quality sushi but didn’t want to make the drive to Muramoto. I am pretty picky about sushi and feel like Madison sushi restaurants can be better in their quality of the rolls/sashimi cut/nigiri (and fish quality). RED is Americanized. Other places are meh, edible for the price.. Muramoto has been a top one for me in our city. I took a chance on Oishi as it’s 7 mins away from home, and I didn’t regret! First, I liked how they post pictures of every item on their online menu for visual expectation. Second, I ordered on the phone and it was good customer service via phone and in person when I picked up. When I opened it at home, I was pleasantly surprised by the appearance. I took a bite and I can confirm, it’s either as good as Muramoto’s quality or slightly better. One thing I would suggest for the nigiri is to reduce a tiny bit of the rice to have a better ratio but it’s not a big deal because I adjusted it myself (I prefer to have a balance taste of the fish’s sweetness with the rice). I will definitely come back for their Sashimi & Nigiri combo.

So I see where some of the negative reviews are coming from - I'm giving Oishi 5 stars because it was good and maybe I'm an easy grader, but it could easily be 4. The 4.8 overall is a little misleading. To be clear, the prices are great for good sushi, which helps secure the 5 star for me. Miso soup - 7/10 Hamachi crudo - A+ fricking excellent. Tri color nigiri - ahi tuna and salmon were phenomenal, but the yellowtail tasted fishy, not what you want. Las Vegas Roll - it was good, but something in it tasted a little fishy. Love the idea of it, but for being their most expensive roll, I expected better. The green tea tempura fried ice cream is one of the best desserts I've ever eaten, highly recommend!!! The service staff are A+, couldn't ask for better. The food came out SO fast, can't complain. I will say that when someone orders a roll and a dessert for their 2nd round, please don't serve the dessert first. I'll probably come back because the value is honestly excellent given the reasonable prices, but this didn't quite meet my expectations of a 4.8 Google star restaurant.
