Slice Mob Hits Madison: Grand Apizza Delivers the Goods
The Slice Mob rolled into Grand Apizza in Madison for our monthly meetup—and let me tell you, it lived up to the hype. This place has been slinging pies for 70 years, and it’s easy to see why they’re still going strong.
We were greeted with warm smiles and incredible hospitality from Mike and his team. The vibe is classic and comfortable, with a “family-run since day one” feel that makes you want to stay a while.
As always, I started with the gold standard: the tomato pie with grated cheese. Absolute perfection. The sauce was bright and tangy with a natural tomato sweetness, balanced beautifully by the salty bite of the cheese. The crust? Thin, crisp, with just the right amount of char and that New Haven–style smoky kiss. Heaven.
Next up: the Special, loaded with mozzarella, sausage, pepperoni, bacon, onions, peppers, and mushrooms. It was a greatest-hits collection of toppings, all playing in perfect harmony. Nothing overpowered—just one balanced bite after another. Salty meats, sweet onions, tangy peppers, umami-rich mushrooms… it was like a flavor orchestra.
And no pizza party is complete without a Foxon Park Diet White Birch. A true Connecticut classic and the ideal pairing for this nostalgic, flavor-packed lunch with lifelong friends.
Big thanks to Mike and his crew for making us feel like part of the Grand Apizza family. Here’s to 70 more years of...
Read moreLet me first start with the good- Really great pizza. Now the bad- zero customer service, bitter and sloppy staff who are clearly unhappy and absolutely zero professionalism. We understand that the service industry is shortstaffed and sometimes you have to wait longer than normal but tonight's experience was hands down one of the worst. The owners really need to re-evaluate what they are doing.
We went in tonight and placed an order for pickup and waited at the bar. The entire experience was a disaster. We waited one hour and forty-five minutes for an order that consisted of exactly 2 medium pizzas and a large garden salad. When we finally saw the bartender walking towards, us, we thought 'halleulujah finally our order is ready' but no... she came back to tell us our pizza was "broken."
What does that even mean? She then comped us a free drink for the "mistake." Cool shouldn't be more than another 20 minutes right but? Nope. We saw people come and go. We saw couples get seated, eat, pay their checks and leave. During this entire time there was zero communication from the staff except for overhearing the bartender gossip and talk about how much she didn't want to be there.
Additionally when we got back home and looked over the bill we realized we had been overcharged. Unbelievable. Stay away from this place. Unless you want...
Read morePizza is always great but beware of delivery. Ordered pizza at 4:10pm for my wife's bday and selected a 6 PM delivery. I thought that was ample time. At 6:30PM not having received pizza I called Grand and inquired about my order. I was told " Order is on the way". I was concerned about temperature of pizza and was informed " They leave here hot and you should be okay". Just as I was ready to call again and ask for a refund, at 6:49PM our driver showed up with pizza. I asked if it was hot and he said it was pulled 15 mins ago. I opened pizza box and took a bite and all I can say, it was like the pizza that you had in your fridge from the night before that you wanted to try the next day- stone cold! Not sure where the breakdown was but no one seemed to care about how the delivery, temp of food upon arrival, or satisfaction was for customer. It was like--put it in the box, it gets there when it gets there and it is what it is. Regretfully, I say Fongool for the experience and w/out showing any compassion, I will take my pie...
