Hillside Cafe — Restaurant in Manhattan

An absolute one of a kind in the business of creating deliciously authentic (sometimes experimental) Mexican fare, alongside a perfectly simplistic American cheeseburger so wildly-understated and popular, that they're ordered quite often during all services . Serving the Manhattan/Ogden/Ft. Riley area for the better part of three generations, Hillside has always been a reliable and satisfying dining experience, resulting in an impressive accumulation of regulars over the years. It's lengthy existence as one of Manhattan's oldest local restaurants is most definitely a tribute to the tireless, iron-willed work ethic present in each and every member (all owners) of the Silva family. The impressive amount of work they put into their business every single shift really shows. So what is it about that food so many have declared so delicious? For my dime, I find Chef Joe's take on every component of his daily Taco/Plate specials so dadgum thoughtful and delicious, that I find myself ignoring the voice in my belly that's always trying to tell me I've had quite enough of my corn tortilla allotment for the day. I generally ignore it though. One fine lunch, years ago, (Chef Joe) prepared us these delectably looking soft corn tacos, filled with a mixture of perfectly shredded, fantastically seasoned beef-tongue, cilantro, and various other culinary secrets I've been thinking about ever since. And finally, the dining area offers a simple, yet gorgeously colorful hipness to an interior with a table layout designed for both staff efficiency and diner comfort. Eating there, I always feel noticably safe and very welcome; their friendly and knowledgeable staff constantly elevating the experience with a professionalism that makes dining at Hillside that much...

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AND $$$!!! NOTHING AUTHENTIC ABOUT THIS MEXICAN RESTAURANT!!!

Ordered a combo#4 chicken enchilada, beef crispy taco, rice and beans with a coffee.

The corn tortilla for the chicken enchilada tasted like an old tortilla that was soggy from sitting in the bag too long and was used for preparation as to not throw it away. The chicken is BLAND. The crispy taco is crispy but the beef is also BLAND. Rice is clumped together and guess what? It's BLAND! Beans are okay but you can see that they were put in a blender and don't taste fresh. Probably canned and masked with better flavor than the rest of the food.

Even the coffee was too weak! You can see how watery the creamer was.

When I spoke to the waitress about the taste of our food, she said that no one had ever complained about their food in all the years they have been open. She never offered to let management know. I requested to speak to the owner only after I paid and he seemed shocked about our comments.

I've ordered delivery from them and the burgers were okay. Tonight I took my visiting family and it was pretty bad. My son, grandma, and daughter all had burgers. They were dry, way overcooked, only had 2 tiny rings of onion on them (talking qiarter sized here), and none of them were able to finish. The fries are clearly bought at the store frozen and dumped in a fryer and half of them were burnt. My mom got the mole chicken enchiladas and she said they were okay but the beans were super runny and oversalted. I got the Taylor's special and can confirm the beans assessment. The burritos were okay but were mostly more runny beans. The taco was crispy on one side, soggy on the other. The tomato in it was a single wedge. I've also never seen a Mexican restaurant that doesn't bring chips and salsa but that is a whole other thing. All this after waiting nearly 45 minutes for the food as we watched them rush to go orders out the door. For my family's first time ever visiting Kansas, I wish I had taken them to El Tapatio or...
